In the captivating start to a new, darkly lyrical fantasy series, Tea can raise the dead, but resurrection comes at a price.

When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy means that she's a bone witch, a title that makes her feared and ostracized by her community. But Tea finds solace and guidance with an older, wiser bone witch, who takes Tea and her brother to another land for training.

In her new home, Tea puts all her energy into becoming an asha - one who can wield elemental magic. But dark forces are approaching quickly, and in the face of danger, Tea will have to overcome her obstacles and make a powerful choice.

despite this I won't be listening to any more books in the series. the author turned a sympathetic and interesting character into a revenge seeking sociopath.someone who is a cross between hitler and a bond villain.she wants to destroy all the kingdoms of the world in order to get what she wants.she has no problem killing her brother who had always loved her and protected her before she turned evil, plus all her friends teachers etc.shes like a school shooter with a nuke.I don't care what her self justification is,all people who do evil are justified in their own minds. The men who destroyed the twin towers thought that they were doing gods will ,that didn't make it so.

creative and we'll written

Overall I enjoyed the story. I am fascinated by geisha lifestyle and this touched on very similar ideas, which I enjoyed. Think ‘Memoir of a Geisha’ with magic and no sex.
The book is split into a future and past state of Tea, the main character, and the biggest downside to the book is the voice of the past Tea. I’m not sure if it was the way the character was written or the voice of the narrator, but past Tea is breathy/whiny/annoying a good part of time. And while it doesn’t seem so bad when you start the book... it’ll definitely wear on you by the end.
Still worth a listen, the book was interesting and the story did captivate me.

Good story, entertaining, a bit whiny

The plot is interesting. The main character is kind of a whiner, but that may have been the narrators interpretation.

For a younger audience, narration a bit dramatic

Enjoyed the story, though the narrator was too breathless and her voice was either too soft or too loud. But I don't like being manipulated into reading another book in a series via cliffhangars. I was looking forward to the other books, but I think I'll wait.

I hate cliffhangars

This book was very good, but I failed at paying attention to much of it. So I'm unsure how it ended (but I remember being surprised that it was over!).

The narrators did great jobs narrating this book, I thought. Some parts were so low in volume that I missed them, though.

I will relisten to this book someday and hope to pay better attention to what all goes on.

I need to relisten to this book!
