Recently diagnosed adult here - and this was was so unbelievably enlightening for me. I went in expecting one diagnosis and left with Severe ADHD Combined - and knew nothing about it really. This book walks through everything I had questions about, and then so much more. Much appreciated.
Audio review- very easy to listen to, and very clearly spoken. Very impressed.

Such a great resource!!!

I found this book to be the most helpful so far in understanding parts of me that me that I did not know were also ADHD traits.

Covers traits of ADHD that othe books do not.

This book has allowed me to put words to my feelings that I’ve had throughout my whole life.

Finally some words to describe my feelings.

This book touches on a lot of the information that’s geared towards the newly diagnosed or those starting to learn. I love Dr Barkley, but I didn’t find this book helpful for me or where I am on my journey for thriving while having ADHD. I can see why it’s it’s got high ratings and can see this book as being very helpful for others.

It’s okay, just not for me

Pretty basic information. The last chapter that gives advice was the equivalent of "get a planner" and felt a bit condescending. The narrator was great and had good expression/not monotonous/etc.

Okay for Newly Diagnosed

It feels like the first half of the book is just a guide to getting diagnosed with ADHD for those who aren't diagnosed yet. For those who are though it is just relentlessly going over the bad memories of childhood for no good reason.

Yes we can skip these parts of the book but the irony here is that in this book it explains how people with ADHD tend to jump the gun and go through things without reading the directions fully or not fully understanding them. This then leads to the dilemma of what one might miss if they decided to skip a large part of the book. Ultimately I couldn't take it and decided to just completely skip to part 2 or 3 (can't remember which) and read on from there.

Overall it feels like these ADHD books are all the same and just go over the same exact things. The reason I keep reading them though is because every book has at least one single great piece of advice that the others will lack. In this books case it was

1) Put reminders around me of my goals and why I want to do them in the first place. For me this is my Silver YouTube Play Button and it reminds me I need to keep working towards my Gold Play Button

2) The lack of impulse control essentially removes your free will. Makes you not feel so bad for some of your childhood mistakes.

3) Constantly check your to-do list otherwise you won't ever actually use it. I've had one for years now but am just now getting into the habit of checking it multiple times per hour even though I know I haven't added anything new to it. This helps build the habit of checking it and hopefully means I won't forget about it anymore.

Very frustrating to read when already diagnosed

Listening through, I find myself saying “didn’t you already say that?” I got a bit frustrated, desperately seeking new content.

Extremely repetitive

this was another long book to get through that I can't seem to focus on without doing something else with my hands.

identified with almost all of the criteria for diagnosis and the coping mechanisms offered seem interesting! but also silly. but definitely worth a listen to if you're curious about potentially having the condition and other coping mechanisms

I'm sltrying to get a diagnosis as an adult of 33. there is so much useful knowledge in here that I never knew and has helped me in figuring out how to explain my symptoms and know other symptoms I didn't know where even related to adhd. thank you for this book.

Amazing

This book is best for individuals new to ADHD and those who need to short their understanding regarding the basic foundation and symptoms related to ADHD.

Definitely to elementary for clinicians unless the provider is uninitiated regarding this disorder.

For those with a solid understanding of ADHD there are still several valuable nuggets of information provided in this book but requires reading through the foundational material to find those nuggets.
