Under a light rain, Mike Mansfield stands stoically beneath a large elm tree, waiting patiently for the person he has been searching for. Burly and in his mid-fifties, Mansfield was what some might call chaotically good—a person with an unshakable sense of right and wrong, and a very unique brand of justice.

However, what Mansfield doesn’t know is that after years of working in the shadows, someone has now found him. And they have been watching Mansfield for some time.

That person is David Bruni. A man with both the money and opportunity to do something truly astonishing with modern technology. He too has been working in secret … to build a supercomputer capable of ‘stitching’ together the billions of pictures taken every day to create snapshots of the world at any given time.

The capability proves to be extraordinary, and one that has coincidentally revealed to Bruni the secret behind Mike Mansfield’s enigmatic success at finding people no one else can. A well-kept secret not even Bruni would have expected.

Yet it’s not until a third critical piece appears, a young INTERPOL agent named Leslie Salazar, that Bruni’s true reason for creating his incredible system finally becomes clear.

For years no one had any idea what Bruni was up to … and that was exactly the way he wanted it.

I'm not even sure why this surprises me because so far, everything that I have read by Mr. Grumley has been a joyous success. This book though, takes his expertise at character development, then adds in a crazy, interesting mystery and then to top things off.....ramps up the tension and action level to the point that I found myself holding my breath at certain parts.

DEFINITE WINNER!!!

This series introduces us to MMC Mike Mansfield. He is a successful investigator who finds lost people - manly children. He has seen the worst that the world can do, and he is still adamant in trying to do his part to save that one person. He is also a vigilante. Yes, he finds the missing. But, if he can also catch the perpetrators, he gives the decision on their punishment to the fathers of the victims. To make the choice on how to handle the punishment of the men that hurt their daughters. Emotional? You better believe it.

Mansfield also uses a fantastic team that he calls the "invisibles". These are older individuals who have been successful at their vocations in their lifetime. But now that they are senior citizens, the world tends to not see them anymore. So....if they are invisible, he decides to utilize their expertise and experience to his advantage. It is an awesome success.

This case takes us on a journey as we follow Mansfield as he takes on a 4 year old case of the missing daughter of a billionaire tech mogul. It does not take long for him to realize that things are not what they seem, and the original investigations went in the complete wrong direction.

This is only the first book in this series and their is going to be another book out in the next month or so.

I can't wait.

What an unbelievably pleasant surprise!

Rollback is great fun: exciting, interesting, 'tightly' written and one of Michael Grumley's very best! The underlying technical elements of the plot are easily plausible for most of us - most of us can relate to pixels via cameras, mobile phones and all manner of imaging technologies present in our daily lives. The plot moves forward at a 'must keep on listening' pace and encourages the listener to dive into and accept the premise of captured images as a kind of time machine. Probably most readers experience that by going through digital or hardcopy photos that date back many years. It's a very clever basis for establishing the reality of Rollback's story! The main character's viewpoint that taking the law into one's own hands is 'true' justice is unsettling and a sub-theme that demands consideration. Idea-wrestling is the mark of a worthwhile book. The listener is compelled to think as well as listen, and Grumley's writing enables such engagement. At times the narrator's enthusiasm overpowers some of the subtleties that Grumley has so deftly included in character development or plot or character-to-character conversations but nothing that genuinely distracts from enjoying the book.

Looking forward to the next Michael Grumley book on audible!!

Keep Rolling Forward, Michael Grumley!

I remember seeing a somewhat similar plot in a short story, can't remember the name. Ito was also based on the concept of tracking an event backwards through public cameras.

A very interesting concept
