One small handwritten letter, sent from a dark, remote corner of the planet and lost in the system for 60 years, is about to change the entire human race.

Outside Denver, Colorado, Joe Rickards stands over a small aircraft wreckage, studying burnt remains still smoldering in a field of freshly fallen snow. He's an investigator for the NTSB, working to carefully roll back the last several hours and identify the cause of the accident.

But this time, he can't.

The details behind this tragedy don't add up. Unlike every other investigation of Joe's career, the facts make no sense. Each new piece of information only makes the accident more mysterious, and more baffling.

Why would a person receive an age-old letter and suddenly disappear into the thick of night...paying to be flown out of a closed airport in the worst possible weather conditions by a pilot who hadn't had his hand on the stick in years? With the only surviving relative insisting her grandfather would never have climbed into a small airplane in the first place, even in perfect weather.

A bizarre string of events culminating in a horrible accident unlike anything Rickards has experienced. Leaving his only hope at understanding it in the hands of the victim's sole remaining relative. Beginning with how a mysterious letter could turn up after being lost in the system for 60 years. Sent by someone who should have already been long-dead.

A single letter Joe Rickards is about to discover, with a secret that will change the entire world.

This book was so engaging that I listened to it straight - only stopping to sleep! Really enjoyed the reader. I will definitely look for more books by the author and reader.

Never turned the TV on while reading this one!

I have become a fan of Michael Grumbly. When an author can surprise me with a story line that is new and still make me feel smarter for the reading than I am hooked.

Scott Brick can read the back of a cereal box and make it sound amazing so when he lends his voice to a good story then I am hooked!

Another exciting and smart story from Mr. Grumley

A very good, clean, plot with no swearing! I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one in the series!
It is hard to find this type of book that isn't filled with sex and swearing! Very refreshing!

Truly a hard book to put down.

I order several hundred bucks a year to listen to and this is one of the best. It starts out a little slow but it really grabs you near the end. My only recommendation would be to have the villains demise spelled out a little more.

Great book, so looking forward to the next one.

I couldn't take any more. The author like so spew and explain random facts that in my opinion distract from the story..

Meh - too many trips off subject

I am really glad I got this book!

Based on other reviews, I expected this to take a turn for the profoundly weird toward the end, but I didn't find that to be the case. Your opinion may vary, of course, but it seemed to fit within my expectations for this kind of story.

I would say this falls pretty firmly into the adventure genre, akin to things like Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, and Uncharted... But with characters and situations that feel more grounded (with the obvious exception being the touch of sci-fi/fantasy near the end).

The writing is quite good overall, with some occasional redundant wording. An example: "As a practical means of helping Germany finance its runaway costs of war run amok." This is a very minor thing, of course, but I think the book might have benefitted from another editing pass.

However, the pacing is excellent. The story begins with a mystery that slowly unfolds, like peeling back the layers of an onion, one by one. I was pulled in almost immediately, and remained interested for the duration.

I am an addict of the adventure genre, admittedly, so I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and I am looking forward to more entries in this series.

Wow.

I loved this book. The plot was intricate, the writing is taut and the narration is Scott Brick's typically excellent performance. The interplay of the past and the present is gripping. He expresses some great insights for life through even minor characters. A great mystery. Better than his previous work, IMO.
