Imagine being alone in the world, one of only a handful to survive a global pandemic. Not only do you struggle to find food, water, and shelter but you also deal with the sadness and losing everyone you know and everything you have.

Fourteen-year-old Greg Dixon is living that nightmare. Attending boarding school outside of Boston, he is separated from his family when a pandemic strikes. His classmates and teachers are dead, rotting in a dormitory-turned-morgue steps from his room. The nights are getting colder, and his food has run out. The last message from his father is to get away from the city and to meet at his grandparents' town in remote New Hampshire. Knowing the impending New England winter could be the final nail in his coffin, Greg packs what little food he can find and sets off on his 100-mile walk north with the unwavering belief that his family is alive and will join him.

As the fast-moving and deadly disease strips away family and friends, Greg's father, John, is trapped in South Carolina. Roadblocks, a panic-stricken population, and winter make it impossible for him to get to his son. John and his three brothers appear to be immune, but they are scattered across a locked-down United States, forced to wait for the end of humanity before travelling to the mountains of New Hampshire.

Spring arrives, and the Dixons make their way north to find young Greg. They meet others along the way, slowly forming the last tribe of humanity from the few people still alive in the Northeast.

I purchased this book on recommendation by the narrator saying that this was the best book that he had ever narrated and I had just finished listening to another one of his books which was pretty good. Pish posh this book is mediocre. It is long which I guess I can appreciate because I pay for something to listen to while working but, the story is unrealistic drible in many parts both pertaining to the characters, situations, and dialouge. The characters are one dimensional probably because there are too many of them. This book is not bad but also not good. I have read much much better in this category. It did pass the time.

This one I just couldn't stop listening to. Well written, and believable. I hope to see more from this author.

I get it - Manuel tried to do a book about the transformation of a post apocalyptic World into a potential utopia. No zombies, no Toecutter Gang; just man versus nature with the goodness that's in all men winning out. I was totally OK with that, and initially the book was kind of moving in the right direction and actually kept my attention. But then a non-decision was made by the non-leaders and it got stupidly weird (or maybe just stupid). While I was looking for that human challenge, that ability of mankind to use their wits to overcome the worse of adversity, what we got was a nonsensical fairy tale that could of ended with the sappy words "they all lived happily ever after". Unfortunately, by the time I got to the end, I no longer cared.

Storyline fell off a cliff

I was pleasantly surprised buy both the narration and the story. I will definitely read listen to this book more than once. I laughed held my breath and couldn't wait to hit the play button on my way home from work everyday. I would actually like to see what happens to the group next to they go back to the US did they stay in Hawaii did they meet other survivors I will definitely look up of her books by this author and the snare reiter great job!

Amazing, fun and captivating I must re- listen too

Any additional comments?

The story line was well developed and I could easily visualize what was being said! I really appreciated that there was no graphic sex. Also, that there was very little swearing! I appreciated an upbeat end of the world book.

Wonderfully done

This book wasn't your typical post apocalyptic novel. This was more of a character study, perhaps one with a few too many characters. It was a good read, with a slow pace but enjoyable plot.
If it failed at anything it was the constant reuse of the "amazing coincidence" to tie story elements together. However, many SciFi stories require some suspension of belief to make the story work, so it was acceptable.

Comfortable read

We want more story!! It was great :) it was a nice deviation from the normal apocalypse story.

More!

As a lifelong apocalypse fan, it's weird hearing a story with almost none of the standard tropes. No zombies, no roving gangs of bandits, no warlords looking to claim territory. It's odd, but refreshing. Instead of filling you with tension and suspense over what strife will call me next, it fills you with hope of what's to come. I consider this a must-read for fans of the genre.

An odd but welcome addition to the genre.
