The memories of the past may be forgotten, but prophecies linger.

Cinder Shade and his fellow cadets have survived a brutal mission in the vast wilds of the Dagger Mountains. Laying to rest many of their brother warriors, they return to the Third Directorate, battered, bruised, and weary of soul.

But the world turns, and new challenges press. Cinder must set aside his grief, especially when granted a task by Anya Aruyen, the elven princess with whom he shares an inexplicable bond. She urges him to further master his skills as a warrior and become worthy of fighting at her side.

Others have also taken note of Cinder. His name is spoken in the high halls of elven palaces. The empress watches him, wondering at his unmatched abilities. So, too, do the dwarves. They fear Cinder, worrying that he is the embodiment of their darkest prophecies. And in the distant north, shadows gather. They whisper of their fallen god, Shet, dead 3,000 years now. Whispering of his rebirth.

But when the prophecies speak conflicting portents and none can decipher the truth, what path can even a consummate warrior take?

Both the writing and the narration are excellent. this book is just as good as the first one which was also excellent and I've already purchased the third and can't wait!

Awesome!

I wanted to love it. I really, really did. But it just didn’t do it for me. I listened to the first two books because I wanted to give it a fair shot. But honestly, I really don’t care about the characters. Nothing made me want to know more. For once, I am fine with characters being forgotten in the corner of my mind. I’m pretty sure the author wrote something else that I really did enjoy though, so I don’t think he’s a bad author. I’m just saying this series isn’t doing it for me. I gave it 4 stars because I was at least able to finish it. Maybe it was the idea that the 2 main characters don’t have a choice in who they are meant to be. At least not from what I’ve read so far. Concept of fate and prophecy is always so lame. It’s like the characters have no say in their lives and they simply follow a preordained path. A coloring book with the pictures drawn and being handed 6 crayons from which to choose to color it rather than a blank canvas from which to begin. The only relationships and character development I liked was Cinder and the dwarves, as well as the prince and his best elf friend. There were so many parts that needed developing at the time that were just glossed over. Like if I wrecked my car on the way to my daughters wedding and ended up in the hospital, but the only thing I discussed for the next two weeks was how they put the wrong color icing on the cake. Just my opinion.

I pushed through

love the story and characters. only thing I dislike, and its small, is sometimes the descriptions on things last a bit too long. again, only sometimes.

Great Characters

I really liked the first book and I'm glad the second of the series adds to, and surpasses the first. Any lingering worry I had when I read the first book disappeared when reading this. The story is engrossing and the audio performance spectacular. I'm happy we got to know more about the supporting cast. I like that Cinder's growing power is still developing and that he goes through a lot of growing pains in his progression to what I'm sure will be his eventual overpowered-self. Can't wait to read the third book!

Just Gets Better

The story just keeps getting better, I love the detail and descriptions. The story is captivating and keeps you on your toes the whole time. The main character is relatable and does not just overdone every obstacle without hard work and strife.

Captivating
