“A must-read for seasoned and new managers alike.” —Johnny C. Taylor Jr., SHRM-SCP, CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)
A groundbreaking guide to mastering the job interview, offering proven advice and techniques to discover your unique interview style that is key to interviewing better—for those on either side of the table.
Conventional interviewing advice doesn’t work. That’s what Anna Papalia learned through years of experience as an HR professional, consultant for Fortune 500 companies, and teacher at the Fox School of Business. None of the existing tools work for one simple reason: they don’t get to the heart of what actually makes a great interview—self-awareness. At its core, an interview is a set of questions about you. If you don’t know yourself, you won’t do well.
Determined to make the process better, more inclusive, and less obscure, Anna spent years researching how people interview and uncovered a new science to interviewing, rooted in the finding that there are four main styles people exhibit in an interview: you can be a Charmer, a Challenger, an Examiner, or a Harmonizer. Your style influences how you view and approach interviews, and ultimately how you perform in them. In Interviewology, Anna teaches you how to identify your individual style (and that of who you are interviewing with) and offers pragmatic tips for using this knowledge to nail your next interview.
Packed with wisdom, Interviewology offers clarity and a dynamic, scientifically validated approach that challenges everything you thought you knew about interviewing, providing unique insight into the process, debunking some of the most common myths, and explaining how you can perform better, whether you’re applying for the job or looking for the right candidate.
Going beyond generic advice that isn’t useful in the real world—such as memorizing rote answers or strict guidelines—Interviewology is a revolutionary approach that focuses on self-awareness—and how to develop it—to help everyone master their own unique interview style. It’s about the power of knowing yourself and how that insight can lead to a more successful career and life.

Another review mentioned that this was a book-length advertisement for the Interviewology Profile, and that is not the case. While it is certainly helpful and adds value to this text/audiobook, it is possible to glean pertinent information from this volume. With that said, I do recommend obtaining an Interviewology profile as it significantly improved my experience, identified my secondary style, and enhanced my engagement with the book. The two documents work together, yet function well as standalone tools.
Additionally, the author shares her story, background, and why she is specifically and uniquely qualified to write this book. Ms. Papalia's story is relatable and demonstrates her resilience, chutzpah, and determination. Furthermore, the tools outlined in this book (and Profile, if you choose to purchase one) are the distillation of decades of experience, education, and teaching made accessible for people who are seeking solid, honest, and accurate professional guidance to improve their interviewing skills.
Needless to say, I highly recommend Interviewology: The New Science of Interviewing by Anna Papalia.

Anyway, the book starts with a story that tugs at the heartstrings. a 15-year-old abused girl who needs her life to change, the title of the chapter, An Interview Can Change Your Life. Then it progresses to a history of how the interview styles were developed and tested for reliability. And then it goes downhill from there and downhill fast. It is a giant Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion "how to", how to identify your privilege, the privilege of those around you, and the lack of privilege in others. The entire time you read this, you are constantly reminded that the world is an unfair place, that men, especially white men are over-represented in the workforce, that all other genders and sexes are at a disadvantage because of internal biases, systemic racism, misogyny, sexism, and on and on and on. You are also nudged in every other sentence to take the $69 profile test to identify your interview style. I am sure there is a small amount of valuable insight in the profile, however, I decided not to further contribute to the absurd idea that the US is such a racist, sexist, misogynistic place. I think taking a DISC or other personality profile test is likely to be just as beneficial if not more so, than the cost of this book and subsequent profile. Then take a deep hard look at yourself and identify your strengths and weaknesses, your successes and failures, ask several people close to you for honest feedback about how you come across and present yourself, then do research on the STAR interview system and the most common questions asked, (even she discusses this), establish answers that are in line with your personality, strengths, weaknesses, successes, failures and your life story be it good, bad, great or mediocre so far and you will have achieved the gist of what this book and profile combined are going to tell you to do. I hope this helps and maybe saves you some money or an audible credit, if Audible gave credits back, I would take it, had I bought this in a bookstore I would have returned it the next day, but I don't think Audible gives credits back and I did not buy as a physical book. Hopefully, my review saves possible buyers some money. Whatever you do, you do you and you will be great!
I expected a lot more
