An Excellent Touchstone for Anyone

My sister and I, as the children of alcoholics, talk a lot about our own alcohol consumption and I have 100% thought about stopping drinking. I'm not an alcoholic, but I definitely use it as a coping mechanism when I'm depressed. I have been badly hungover. It's miserable, especially as I've gotten older. I appreciate the content of this book and I think it's important to ask yourself occasionally if you're happy with the amount you're drinking, even if only to touch base with yourself about the reasons why you're doing it.

I will definitely look back to this book if I ever need to reconsider my relationship with alcohol and it's worth reading if you're wondering if you need to quit.

There's no shame in it, and this book does absolutely nothing to make anyone feel awful about their drinking. It's a really kind, compassionate door to a potential solution if you need one.

I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest, voluntary review.

A New Perspective

Trish offers a fresh way to consider your drinking. No judgment. No strict rules. Just guidance, questions, and wisdom earned from her own experiences. I find myself wanting to re-read portions, to reinforce my new mindset. This is a very easy listen and nicely narrated by Trish.

A Very Down to Earth Approach and Perspective

The way this author relates her experience and journey is amazing. I have been sober for 2 years and still find it hard to resist. The book is more focused on the part of taking the fist step but can help those who have quit already. I highly recommend this for those whom are struggling.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Really made me do a gut-check...

I find it helpful to assess life from time to time. I do this with clients every day.

I’ve not taken into consideration my own relationship with drinking...until listening to this book.

Hearing Trish’s candid story has given me reason to consider why I drink. I am thankful for her insights and authenticity.

Great Book to Kick Off Your Self Examination

It took me some time to get up the nerve to listen to this. I was a little worried about getting guilty feelings over having someone talk to me about drinking. I will say that the way this book is laid out there are no judgments made and that this provides an easy and methodical approach to looking at your relationship with alcohol. Anybody who has ever had thoughts about quitting drinking deep down knows why they should. After the regrets go away from a bad night and a few days pass, those reasons you have deep down seem to pass as well. Having someone talk to you about all those reasons in a nonjudgmental way and who is not a family member makes a lot of sense.

Trish Taylor, through her own experiences, talks to you about how quitting is possible, reasons for quitting, and explains how we trick ourselves into thinking we are not dependent on drinking regardless of the amount we consume. Taylor provides at least to me, chapter after chapter all the different things I know, but needed to have someone walk me through them so that I could hear them and not just think them. Most of what this book goes through is stuff all drinkers know, just put in a way that chapter after chapter you start to really say, yeah you are right.

I would say if you are listening to this to honestly reflect on your drinking, you should pause the story when she tells you to pause and reflect. While I don’t know if this book will ultimately cause me to give up drinking, but it was something worth while listening to in order for me to think more about if I should.

Taylor has a lovely voice and accent. I think she did a great job narrating her own book and it is clear that she means what she is saying and is really trying to be helpful to those who want to quick drinking.

The missing drama-free manual

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review. As such, I had middling expectations at best -- but for free, any small bit of insight is better than none, so nothing to lose. Holy cow. From the beginning she nailed everything which has turned me off from other stop drinking philosophies.

This book is not for everyone. If these describes you though, consider giving this book a try:

This is a book for people who haven't driven themselves into the gutter.

It's for people who haven't destroyed relationships, cars, and careers.

It's for people who can't see throwing themselves into dramatic 12 step groups.

This is a book for people who want to see the new Marvel movie at an earlier showing because it'll leave room to slip in another drink or 2 before bedtime.

It's for people who find reasons to say "it's not bad, at least I don't [semi-arbitrary benchmark here]."

It's for people who make rules with themselves like "I'll only drink after the kids are in bed."

It's for people who can't remember the last time they've been at a party where alcohol was present and they didn't have a glass or 2.

It's for people who when told "this author might be able to really change your life" react with "Thank you so much. I'd like to buy you a drink."

Really enjoyed!

First, I have to start off by stating that I got this book free of charge in exchange for a review, but as I always state, this does not in any way impact my review. My reviews are always honest and my own.

This was a really fun read, even with real-world problems.

Everyone is Different

I love Trish Taylor's attitude toward drinking - everyone needs to make their own decision. She was pretty sure she wasn't an alcoholic, yet thought it was time to review her relationship with alcohol. She reviews everything one should consider in their personal review of that decision. She emphasizes one's own decision, not what everyone else is doing. Taylor is not preachy. This was a refreshing listen to a touchy topic. I haven't quite decided what my decision will be: eliminate it or moderate it - after all 4 ounces a day isn't much to moderate. So with the coming new year, if you're looking for a resolution - maybe give this one a listen.
