Resumen del Editor

For centuries, bread has been known as the "staff of life". But for millions of Americans affected by gluten-related disorders, consuming gluten, the complex protein found in wheat, rye, and barley, can be hazardous to their health.

In a recent poll presented by Scientific American, over 30 percent of Americans reported wanting to cut down or eliminate gluten from their diets; the gluten-free market is a $6.3 billion industry and continues to expand.

Now, in Gluten Freedom, Alessio Fasano, MD, founder of Massachusetts General Hospital's Center for Celiac Research, reveals the latest developments in scientific research and treatment, and the answers they provide for this rapidly expanding audience. This groundbreaking, authoritative guide is an invaluable roadmap for the newly diagnosed, for those already dealing with gluten-related issues, and for anyone who thinks they may have an issue with gluten.

Distinguishing scientific fact from myth, Gluten Freedom explains the latest research, diagnostic procedures, and treatment/diet recommendations, helping consumers make the best choices for themselves and their families. Gluten Freedom also discusses important nutritional implications for behavior-related diagnoses such as autism and conditions such as depression, anxiety, and "foggy mind".

Highly Recommend this Must Read/Listen Book

Highly recommend this for anyone with celiac disease or gluten-related issues. Dr. Fasano is a primary source researcher and pioneer who is personally responsible for advances in recognition, awareness, testing methods, and diagnosis of celiac disease. I had never heard of him before stumbling on this book in Audible through a subject search. After listening, I realize how much his contributions to this field have helped me and so many others by raising awareness and improving testing methods. The book goes into the current state of research and science, and also includes some history explaining why there was such low awareness of celiac disease for so long. The narrator exudes the compassion that the book was written with, and I found it quite listenable. The recipes are just a short section and you can fast forward through them if you want. There are chapters that address the sociological aspects of celiac disease from point-of-view perspectives that are very relatable. As a kid I underwent a series of horrible tests and exams because of GI symptoms, only to be told by my pediatrician that the cause was my nerves and that I was too high strung. Of course this same pediatrician didn't think to test me for celiac disease (or even lactose intolerance). This lack of awareness in both the medical community and general public at the time effectively left me to 20-plus years of struggling with GI issues on my own with no clear answers as to what the cause was. It wasn't until about 2012 that a family practice doctor noticed my iron was low and thought to screen for celiac disease. I am ever grateful to that family practice doctor, and now to Dr. Fasano whose work has moved the needle so much in bringing awareness and getting us to a point where a family practice doctor might know to screen for this. Thank you for this book!

interesting and educational

The history of the study of this disease as well as the practical how-tos of how to live with the diagnosis are both very interesting and helpful.

knowledge negates fear.

knowing the why helps one to understand the unknown. having access to facts negates fear of the unknown. being able to see into the future of the unknown creates hope.

Not good as an audio book

Perhaps this is good as a reference book, but for an audio book I would recommend keeping long lists and recipes until the end of the book if they're included at all.
