When a NASA satellite discovers an astonishingly rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice, the floundering space agency proclaims a much-needed victory, a victory with profound implications for NASA policy and the impending presidential election. To verify the authenticity of the find, the White House calls upon the skills of intelligence analyst Rachel Sexton. Accompanied by a team of experts, including the charismatic scholar Michael Tolland, Rachel travels to the Arctic and uncovers the unthinkable: evidence of scientific trickery, a bold deception that threatens to plunge the world into controversy. But before she can warn the President, Rachel and Michael are ambushed by a deadly team of assassins. Fleeing for their lives across a desolate and lethal landscape, their only hope for survival is to discover who is behind this masterful plot. The truth, they will learn, is the most shocking deception of all.©2001 Dan Brown (P)2004 Simon & Schuster Inc. AUDIOWORKS is an imprint of Simon & Schuster Audio Division, Simon & Schuster Inc. Reseñas de la Crítica

"Brown moves into new territory with his latest. It's an excellent thriller: a big yet believable story unfolding at breakneck pace, with convincing settings and just the right blend of likable and hateful characters. He's also done his research, folding in sophisticated scientific and military details that make his plot far more fulfilling than the norm." (Publishers Weekly)
"A dazzling high-tech adventure...Brown proves once again that he is among the most intelligent and dynamic of authors in the thriller genre." (Library Journal)
"This is pretty exciting stuff...and Brown certainly does have a knack for spinning a suspenseful yarn." (Booklist)

I think some people are just too hard to please. I really enjoyed DaVinci Code because of the fast-paced suspense and the subject matter. I enjoyed this book for the same reason - maybe more because of the technology topic. I have listened to over 70 audio books and this is one of the most enjoyable I have heard -- It was difficult to put down. Sure, the heros get lucky a bunch through fortuitous events-- but what's a thriller without them -- Think James Bond movies.

The narrator sounds were sometimes noticeable, but not to the extent that it bothered me. I probably would not have thought about them had others not made a big deal of them.

Some people are too picky -- This is a must

In an attempt to get a feel for Dan Brown's other work I checked this out and enjoyed it. It had suspense and a mild political theme while incorporating science and exploration. His characters were interesting and the back and forth of the story kept me wanting more throughout the book. I recommend this to those who want a good read/listen and who have an interest in science, discovery, suspense, and want some excitement.

Worth checking out!

With an author like Dan Brown I would think that any studio could afford an audio engineer who is talented at minimizing background sounds. However, I listened to this book with headphones on and I could hear WAY too many bodily noises by the narrator. Story was fine, nothing like the Robert Langdon series but has an interesting premise. It was just really hard for me to listen to the story with all of the noises from the narrator. I usually don't mind noises but this one really kept me from getting into the story.

Story was okay but studio needs audio engineer

Not one of his best, but his others were so good to me that this one had high expectations. Worth the listen though.

Fair

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If you like Dan Brown then I always tell them this is one you will want to read. The thing with Dan is that he does his homework on the subject at hand. This book is about NASA and meteorites cover up and deceit! Love it love it.

Have you listened to any of Richard Poe’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the death chase is on and the main character realise what they have found. Conspiracy theories!

Any additional comments?

Go Dan. Hurry and write another book.

One of my Dan Brown favorites!

This is my first Dan Brown novel. Obviously, not his most popular, but that's ok. I was rather impressed at how Dan Brown is able to keep you turning the pages. Not the best story, but still a page turner. He writes it like tv serial that has a cliffhanger every week. It just reaches out and turns the page for you(er. um, hits the play button). On the downside, the audio is disturbing. I recommend having some white noise in your environment whilst listening. Or using the worst headphones you have. The mic picked up everything on this recording. swallowing, lip smacking, even burping. Richard Poe is a very good narrator, but boy, they need to maybe edit this a tad. Overall, a good book and worth the credit.

Good. if you can get by the burping

For a book as old as this one, it is shockingly still relevant. This book was a slow starter and seemed to take ages to get interesting. But, once the cast of characters had been established and all the pieces were on the board, the book really picked up pace. you really get into the story and want to know who "the Controller" is. I narrowed it down pretty early, but was still guessing until the final reveal.

This was a very fun listen.

slow start, but builds quickly

Protagonist Rachel Sexton is lucky to possess more than the nine lives of the average house cat. What’s more is the fact she and the other characters never stop to eat or sleep in this true to form thriller that could have ended an hour or two earlier. Author Dan Brown does his research brilliantly, so brilliant that if he has made up the science behind this story, the reader would never suspect. I noted a little background noise - breath sounds or turning pages or whatever - but Poe does a fabulous job performing deep suspense as narrator.

More than Nine Lives
