A woman disappears in suspicious circumstances, the obvious suspect is murdered, and a family tears itself apart.

When master sleuth Lord Edgington is called to investigate the disappearance of a politician’s wife at a beauty spot in the countryside, things go badly from the outset. A bloody and abandoned car hints at a dark fate for the missing woman, and when her husband forbids the detectives from entering his property, there is only one conclusion to draw.

The case is soon turned on its head when the prime suspect is murdered and the heirs to the grand estate at Silent Pool clash. But which of the five bickering siblings wanted their parents dead and who will the killer target next? As the police fail to get the situation under control, and two warring camps emerge, Lord Edgington and his increasingly capable assistant must dig into the past of a unique and uniquely horrible family if they wish to catch the culprit before there is no one left to blame.

A 1920s whodunit with a warm-hearted and original detective duo, a cast of well-drawn characters and a mystery that will leave you guessing right to the end. Death at Silent Pool is the fourteenth novel in the witty and twisty “Lord Edgington Investigates” series, but can be listened to as a standalone case.

I have loved every one of Benedict Brown’s books, thoroughly enjoy the adventures of eccentric Lord Edgington and grandson Christopher. They are interesting, and always fun to listen to. I don’t know what went wrong, or if it was a ghost writer, but this is NOT the writing of the Benedict Brown I remember and love. This is filled with misery and hatred and dysfunctional characters to such an extreme that I was feeling fairly turned off just listening. Arguably most books that are similar cozy mysteries are filled with dysfunctional folks, but not this depressing and unpleasant. Please bring back the fun and often funny previous style, or you will have lost one of your most dedicated readers!

Might not have continued with this series had this been my first Lord Edgerton book, however, I can forgive Benedict Brown for a one off. On the plus side, I like that Christopher is growing up and is more mature, hope this continues. The problem is the plot, too many murders. It was a clever idea that somehow did not work.

Weird but entertaining

Thought I was reading a mystery from Midsomers Murders. I like complexity and trying to figure out a solution. This mystery provides the clues afterwards. Yes, how fun to come up with the plot. Maybe the series has run too long. Hate to say goodbye to all the characters.
