Unwanted betrothals, assassination attempts, and a battle for the crown converge in Danielle L. Jensen's Dark Skies, a new series starter set in the universe of the YA fantasy Sarah J. Maas called "everything I look for in a fantasy novel".

A runaway with a hidden past....

Lydia is a scholar, but books are her downfall when she meddles in the plots of the most powerful man in the Celendor Empire. Her life in danger; she flees west to the far side of the Endless Seas and finds herself entangled in a foreign war where her burgeoning powers are sought by both sides.

A commander in disgrace....

Killian is Marked by the God of War, but his gifts fail him when the realm under the dominion of the Corrupter invades Mudamora. Disgraced, he swears his sword to the kingdom’s only hope: the crown princess. But the choice sees him caught up in a web of political intrigue that will put his oath - and his heart - to the test.

A kingdom under siege....

With Mudamora falling beneath the armies of the Corrupter, Lydia and Killian strike a bargain to save those they love most - but it is a bargain with unintended and disastrous consequences. Truths are revealed, birthrights claimed, and loyalties questioned - all while a menace deadlier and more far-reaching than they realize sweeps across the world.

The only reason I will continue to listen to the rest of the series is because it is actually good. But the male narrator is awful. If you cannot annunciate then you should not be a narrator.

The most awful male narrator EVER

Start to finish, what an incredible ride. The heart pounding pace, Character development is 10/10, excellent set up for book 3, this series has a choke hold on me.

Incredible book

While I enjoyed the story, the male narrator, was distracting and without credence. No one speaks the way he narrated. And no actor would speak in the manner he narrated unless it was a trait of his character. He spoke in choppy, quick bursts of words conveying little or no emotion. If the story was not as soundly written, his portrayal of the character would have completely weakened the character. Am not looking forward to hearing him in the next book. The male narrator of the first book in this series was excellent.

The female narrator was excellent and was the only salvation for the performance aspect of the story. I recommend listening to the book on the strength of the story and the female narrator.

Strong story; poor male narration

I absolutely loved this book and all of Danielle Jensens works. My issue with this is the narration. I thought Stephanie Willis did a great job as Lydia. Her voice acting and accents were very good. You could tell the difference between different characters and was very understandable overall. DeVante Johnson’s performance, however was not my favorite. Sometimes he spoke too quickly and the words ran together. I couldn’t tell the difference between the men speaking, or the women speaking. I found myself not paying attention to Killians part of the story and I think it did a disservice to my experience of this book.

Great!
