Killian Barclay is a grumpy Scottish billionaire who hates me…and now I'm his wife.

Their marriage of convenience is anything but…

All Killian Barclay wants is to be left the hell alone. He's had enough heartache to last a lifetime, and he has no more need for love—earning him the reputation of a broody Scot and eventually turning his famous ancestral home into a den of iniquity. It doesn't take long for tales of his raunchy house parties to reach the rest of his family, though, inspiring them to hatch a plan to shake Killian out of his routine.

New Yorker Sylvie Devereaux is tough as nails—as the daughter of famous yet neglectful parents, she's grown a hard shell and keeps everyone at arm's length. So when she sneaks into Barclay Manor during a trip to Scotland to get a glimpse of a famous heirloom, she doesn't anticipate facing off against the brutish, maddening highlander who lives there. And she certainly didn't expect to ever see the bastard again.

Yet just weeks later, she's approached by Killian's family with a proposal—move to Scotland and marry Killian to improve his playboy reputation, and after one year, she'll walk away with ten million dollars. Sylvie agrees, even knowing that their plan is more deceptive than he realizes. But as she grows closer to Killian and the end of their year together, she has to decide: Is the love of a good man with a dark soul worth keeping, or is she willing to break Killian's heart now that it's well and truly hers?

I grabbed this as an audiobook from Audible as a part of my Amazon Music subscription. It was an enjoyable listen. Will Watt's accent is to die for. Keli Tager was able to demonstrate her array of accents: American, Scottish, and British. I was impressed. The story was good, but I did feel like the secret was kept for too long. It made me anxious, but I can see how it lends itself to the plot. If you enjoy Sara Cate's books, pick this one up. I will for sure be picking up the subsequent books in this series.

Great new direction for Sara Cate

I'm a big fan of a marriage of convenience romance, especially when it delivers on all of the best parts of that trope. The "my wife" moments were top tier and we also got the whole term of endearment thing that starts off as sarcastic and then turns into the real deal. We love to see it!!

However, I am not a fan of secret keeping so it was hard to enjoy this book sometimes knowing The Big Bad™ was looming. I did like the way the ending unfolded though so I guess I can't be too upset about it lmao.

Killian was ROUGH in the first half of this book. I feel like calling him mean is an understatement lmao. Sylvie is a stronger woman than I am cause I don't think I could stand being called a cow/wench/bitch as often as she did. It was really endearing to see him [eventually] show his sweet side as he fell in love with her.

I oscillated between my feelings about the audiobook lol. I will never say this because I actually love dual style audiobooks, but this one would have greatly benefited from being duet considering the fmc is American and the mmc is Scottish. The female narrator did her best with the accent, but some times it was not great.

Marriage of Convenience w/ a broody Scot? Yes pls!

another series from Sara Cate brings another happy ending and great story. Killian is a loner. lost in his mansion in Scotland after the tragic death of his parents. everyone in the Barclay family is concerned about him. his days of partying and drinking have subsided slightly, but they still show their ugly head every now and then. ambitious Sylvie wants to see the typewriter that once wrote one of her favorite books. So she sneaks in to Killian's home and unfortunately he catches her. after craziness and a short time, she gets an interesting visit from one of Killian's relatives. if she marries him and it lasts for one year, she will get $10 million. The trade-off is that Killian loses the home that he loves. Not caring much about the big brute that scared her a little bit when she broke into his home, Sylvie decides she has nothing to lose so she goes for it. It turns out things are very different than she expected and the love between the two of them grows. Sylvie can't in good conscience. keep going with what's happening and Killian can't keep her locked in his house. The two struggle and hearts break as they go their own way. It's a hard thought hea but it turns out to be a wonderful story.

Broody Scott and his NY girl

This story was a rollercoaster ride, if I've ever seen one. I gotta say I loved the whole “I hate you, but I love you” dynamic between the main characters in this story.

I loved how Sylvie and Killian started out literally hating each other. The way that they could not stand to be in the same room without being at each other's throats was absolutely entertaining. But if their hate for each other ran deep, once those feelings flipped, their love for each other ran even deeper and it was just so beautiful to watch the way that they were both willing to give up everything they had for the other

Quote: “The world outside this room is cosmic and too massive to comprehend. But the world that exists between him and me is more so. The love we share is infinite.”

“Do you, darling? Do you promise to keep me?”
