🎧 Duet Narration: Alyssa Avery & Matthew Sharpe

This might be the darkest, most “pitch black” romance I’ve ever listened to—and I’m still processing it. The storyline pulled me in immediately, blending the danger and decadence of a secret society with the unnerving intimacy of captivity. The Brethren Lords’ world is dripping with power, corruption, and hidden agendas, and watching Liliana get pulled deeper into their shadows kept me hooked.

The trigger warnings do not exaggerate—Magnus is morally black with absolutely no redeeming qualities, and the book never tries to soften that. The tension between him and Liliana is a constant push and pull—equal parts fear, defiance, and unwanted attraction. I found myself questioning my reactions at every turn—Did I like this? And if I did, why? That unsettling, self-reflective edge is part of what made it such an intense listen.

Matthew Sharpe embodied Magnus with cold precision and sinful menace, while Alyssa Avery’s posh British accent brought Liliana to life with sophistication and vulnerability. Her performance made her strength and hidden moments of fear feel incredibly real, and you could almost hear her resolve crack when she was alone.

Dark, twisted, and brimming with secret-society intrigue—Deviant will push your boundaries and keep you thinking long after the final chapter.

I don’t say this about a lot of books, but this is one. I will say definitely check your trigger warnings because this is not a dark romance. This story is a pitch black romance. This is a dark captive romance, so there are a lot of things in this story that they can make people uncomfortable. Now, with all that being said, this was a a phenomenal audiobook. I had such a great time listening to this!!! Alyssa and Matthew you two were just chef’s kisses in this!! I couldn’t stop listening to this audiobook even when I wanted to! like they were points I knew I need to stop take a break and recover but the story was just that good that had to be like no I just gotta keep going like I have to know what’s gonna happen next!! the story revolves around our MMC Magnus and our FMC Lilliana! Liliana is a reporter and Magnus is a member of this group known as the brethren and if your mind starting to go where I think it’s going yes this does have a secret society, cult thing trope in it! The Brethren basically control the entire world because there a lots of higher power who are a member of the brethren and Liliana was writing a Story about the brethren and who were members and Magnus catches onto this, so he tracks her down, captures her and we go from there with our dark captive romance building. Again is book is a pitch black romance, do not expect the MMC to have a realization moment and change for our FMC. No he is 100000000000000% a villian and he does not change! So please please please check your triggers!!!! Alyssa and Matthew thank you two so much again for the phenomenal performance you both did during this book!!! You both put your heart and soul into this and I loved every second of it!!!

Let me start by saying that is not dark romance, it’s pitch black. Please check your triggers!!

Now to the fun stuff! This book was a journey to say the least. Was I intrigued? Yes! Was I constantly questioning my morals throughout the book? Also yes. But I liked it! So different from anything else I’ve ever read and honestly couldn’t put it down.

Alyssa Avery and Matthew Sharpe were both new to me narrators going into this and I really loved their performances. I think they kind of helped me stick it out when the story got a little hard for me to handle.

This book is incredibly dark and disturbing—far from a traditional romance. It takes the “touch her and die” trope to an extreme level. If you’re comfortable with explicit sexual violence, deeply unsettling situations, suicide attempts, and a forced Stockholm Syndrome dynamic, this may be a book worth exploring.
It’s a difficult read at times, but one I won’t soon forget. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book 📕.
