Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Story
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

A great resource
This book is easy to listen too, points broken down into sections that I can easily digest even while listening on the go. The narrator's voice is also calming, I enjoyed listening overall. Although I don't have BPD, I think this book would be a great resource to anyone wanting to learn about the topic, those who have actually been diagnosed (but of course this is just a guidebook and nothing can replace an actual therapist), but it gives you enough information to learn about the topic in an easy to understand manner.

Great Combination of Story and Practicality
I really like how the author wasn’t t afraid to be vulnerable and share their story, but the book is far more than this. The practical exercises gave me a lot of insight and I’m excited to try them out for myself!

Great resource
This offers a clear and helpful introduction to understanding BPD. I found it very accessible. I liked the straightforward explanations and relatable examples. The real-life stories made it more relatable. I appreciated the practical exercises. The tone of the book is supportive and non-judgmental; the simple language used throughout the book means that anyone, regardless of their familiarity with psychological terms, can benefit from it. I think it's a great tool for both personal growth and for supporting others.

Support Through Lived Experience
I liked the fact that this book was more direct and less clinical. Having first hand stories from individuals with BPD was very helpful. This book is a great tool to refresh and practice DBT skills outside of a group or clinic.

Please Listen
I truly cherished listening to this. Understanding the experience of living with bipolar disorder is a challenge unless you've experienced it firsthand or have a close connection to someone who has. My mom struggles with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and schizophrenia, and it's a daily struggle for her - but I'm committed to educating myself about these conditions so I can provide better support. This book has been incredibly enlightening, and I'm grateful to the author for sharing their own journey. Currently, I'm working through the worksheets with my mom, and I'm eagerly anticipating seeing her progress!
