Before they were the Boxcar Children, Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny Alden lived with their parents on Fair Meadow Farm. Although times are hard, the Aldens are happy - “the best family of all,” Mama likes to say. One day, a blizzard hits the countryside, and a traveling family needs shelter. The Aldens take them in, and the strangers soon become friends. But things never stay the same at the farm, and the spring and summer bring events that will forever change their lives.

Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny are four recently orphaned siblings. Not wishing to live with their hard-hearted grandfather, whom they have never met because of his disapproval of their parents' marriage, the children strike out on their own. On a cold night, the children stop at a bakery to ask for food. They are invited to stay the night, but while there, the children overhear the baker and his wife discussing a plan to keep the older children as labor. The children escape and flee to the woods and create a home for themselves in an abandoned box-car in the forest.

Four orphaned siblings, determined to stay together as a family, decide to inhabit an abandoned boxcar and turn it into their new home in the woods. When one of the siblings falls ill, the others go out to seek a doctor to save their sister. Meanwhile, their wealthy grandfather has offered a sizable reward to anyone who has information about his grandchildren, hoping that they can all be reunited once more. As the children continue to evade being found out, will they ever know peace?

"The Boxcar Children" is a classic children's tale by Gertrude Chandler Warner, originally published in 1924. "The Boxcar Children" tells the tale of four orphaned children, Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny, who create a home for themselves in an abandoned boxcar in the forest. Through the intervention of a doctor who treats Violet who has fallen ill, the children meet their grandfather. Unlike their erroneous perception of him, their grandfather turns out to be a kind man; they move in with him and the beloved boxcar a playhouse in the back yard.
