The youngest daughter of the silver fairy king, Rebecca’s life up to now has been—in a word—sheltered. Her extensive education has prepared her for almost any situation she could expect to encounter, but no one thought to teach her how to handle her first brush with love, let alone being kidnapped by traitors. She only has her father's sense of humor, her mother's sense of pride, and the hope that her friends will rescue her in time. She will have to draw on half-forgotten pearls of wisdom to survive these coming ordeals without bringing shame upon herself or her house.

This book is a collection of short stories of travel, adventure, and growing up as an Italian Catholic. The author tells stories of her great grandparents that came to America, and how it was literally murder getting out of Sicily. Coming from being poor peasants in Italy, America promised to provide the family with the opportunities to become wealthy aristocrats, even if one had to bootleg whiskey to do it. Shocked by the faith-shaking realization that nuns were actually human beings underneath all that garb, she was still hopeful that the Pope would be coming to dinner.

Amy and Lucy come home one spring day and see their dad tied up. The timing was perfect for the Mom since she had done it, and she wasn't expecting the girls there. She told them to quickly leave, acting as if someone was after them, and she would try to untie their father. They ran out, fearful for their parents. The mother comes running out alone just as an explosion occurs. Mom tells the girls that she had come home just momentarily before they did and that she couldn't get the father untied in time. Joining god's Sanctuary was supposed to fulfill Donna Ferguson's desire to follow and serve Jesus Christ. Instead, she finds herself in a world of fear and torment filling each day from the moment she moves to Darthmore. As the leaders terrorize, isolate, ostracize, and finally separate her from her children, she sees a parallel between her plea to be reunited with them and god calling "come home children" to those he loves.
