Resumen del Editor

This book examines the causes of delayed speech and the issues of toddlers who are late talkers. Parents will learn different ways to help their children through this difficult time, while also providing support, acceptance, and leading a normal life without making the child feel as if they must be fixed. No matter the cause of a child's inability to talk, several foolproof methods are offered to help them communicate. Parents can learn the following from the book:

  • Ways to encourage children, specifically those between one to three years of age, to speak and pronounce words.
  • The best tools to help their children learn to speak through interactive toys and games.
  • How praise plays an important role in promoting speech and how criticism can exacerbate speech delay.
  • Methods to find out if their child is suffering from a mental illness.
  • Ways to create routines for their children and work on building a relationship by understanding how their children communicate.

The book is designed to help parents cut through confusion and stress to figure out if their children need help. Those interested in learning how to develop young children's language will find this book indispensable.

Knowing what to do with your child is important

I have a daughter and she is adorable. Still, there are times that I will be frustrated. Those times are when I don't know what to do or how to do deal with the situation. The child talking late really frustrates the parent but if they have things left to try to help their children, they won't give up. It is when they don't have anything else to do to tackle the problem that frustrates the parents the most.
This book shows so many things we can try as a parent to help our children talk naturally. It is a very systematic and easy-to-follow guide to analyze and help the children's communication skills.

Wonderful Information !

I have a friend who has been going through this issue with her young son, and I also spent years as a social worker assisting foster parents with children who have these special needs. The information the author provides in this book is spot on!

I appreciate how the author uses words of affirmation within this book to encourage parents and those working with children in this population. The author states that it is crucial for those of us working with these children to consistently affirm them and letting them know that their success will not be hindered by their current challenges.

The author goes through the stages of Childhood Development to help parents gauge where their child is developmentally, and when to be concerned and seek additional help.

I appreciated the personal story the author relayed to when she had these challenges with her own child. There were those who were quick to advise that the speech delay was due the author not spending enough quality time with her child. Others will give you their own opinions, but it’s important to stay focused on improvement rather than blaming. Truly, these superficial explanations don’t have anything to do with the issue at hand.

I was also fascinated with the section explaining children who learn 2 or more languages at once. It’s good to know that this won’t have adverse affects on a child’s speech progression.

Overall this book is truly amazing. I will personally recommend this book to those I know who are currently dealing with these issues. They need to know that they are not alone,’and many children and families are in the same boat. The author also transparently shares that, she, too talked late but that did it hamper her success. The author’s personal connection to this subject definitely lends even more credence to the information in this book.

2 thumbs up!

Peace of mind and a plan

This book is filled with simple tips that parents can take to help their children learn. One of the things I liked is how the author explains why some children speak later than others and then provides a lot of techniques to teach children how to talk. Great book!!

Authoritative

This is a powerful resource that will help parents, teachers and other caregivers the world over to give their child practical tools to help them overcome delayed speech in a healthy way. The information covered so many aspects of this, and it was researched thoroughly. Many parents and children would not have suffered as a result of this nerve-wracking phase and condition if they have had this book. I have already recommended it to two parents who are currently going through this. Kudos to the author for this very valuable book.

Great book

This book is very comprehensive on the subject, it is well-written and suggests a great deal of expertise and understanding by the author. The world sees late talkers as a big issue, as someone who will not accomplish much and therefore is diminished by their expectation and accomplishments in life. They can become a brilliant, highly educated individual. This book offers ground level assessment tools as well as how-to advice, and will comfort and bring awareness to parents dealing with ASD, non ASD and Autism.

Help your children to communicate!

This audiobook was very insightful; it focused on ways to assist your child talk and ways to encourage speech within your child. It also provides helpful tips to consider if your child is on the spectrum or a late talker. If you feel there is a problem with your child, speak with your child's pediatrician; however, even if a language pathologist/ speech therapist is recommended, it is also good to know what to do as parents to assist in your child's development. This book helps you to do that.

This was an important book.

Although I did not have issues with my children speaking at the correct age, I can see how being late could have effected their grade placement. This book helps with understanding what could be going on with your child. Also it helps in attempting to get them speaking by a certain age that would help in early assessment. Important book for ADHD families.

Comforting, empowering, and educational.

Janet Colvin's book delves into the nitty-gritty of toddlers who aren't talking yet, exploring the myriad factors contributing to this problem. Some parents would rather avoid the more challenging work of recognizing delayed developmental milestones and convince themselves that their child is "just a late talker." But, of course, there are more severe issues, and many youngsters start talking late. Autistic children frequently have delayed language development, but late talkers are not always autistic.

But for some kids, it's only a phase that won't last forever. The author clearly shows how children learn language at different ages and stages of development. The fact that most people who start talking late eventually catch up to their friends is also quite encouraging.

Colvin provides eleven methods to help parents help their children without making them feel broken or disrupting family life too drastically.

As a former school nurse and first-grade teacher, I worked closely with our school's speech and language therapist. Unfortunately, children often only participate in speech therapy for 30 to 60 minutes each week. To make the most of that expert intervention, parents need to know what to do to help their child outside the session. For parents who want to learn about the phenomenon of late talking in a way that is comforting, empowering and educational, this book is a great place to start.

When your child doesn’t speak, it’s a tremendous worry, especially when your friends kids are speaking easily. This book is an amazing resource for parents. It gives great understanding and strategies. It removes some of the fear we have when our kids done hit our milestones as fast as we want them too.
