As Montrealer Catherine Day sets foot in a remote fishing village and starts asking around about her birth mother, the body of a woman dredges up in a fisherman's nets. Not just any woman, though: Marie Garant, an elusive, nomadic sailor and unbridled beauty who once tied many a man's heart in knots. Detective Sergeant Joaquin Morales, newly drafted to the area from the suburbs of Montreal, barely has time to unpack his suitcase before he's thrown into the deep end of the investigation.

When Angel’s body is finally discovered, it’s clear something very sinister is afoot.

Fisheries officer Simone Lord is transferred to Quebec's remote Magdalen Islands for the winter, and at the last minute ordered to go aboard a trawler braving a winter storm for the traditional grey seal hunt, while all of the other boats shelter onshore. Detective Sergeant Joaquin Moralès is on a cross-country boat trip down the St Lawrence River, accompanied by Nadine Lauzon, a forensic psychologist working on the case of a savagely beaten teenager with Moralès' old team in Montreal.

Ce matin-là, Vital Bujold a repêché le corps d’une femme qui, jadis, avait viré le cœur des hommes à l’envers. En Gaspésie, la vérité se fait rare, surtout sur les quais de pêche. Les interrogatoires dérivent en placotages, les indices se dispersent sur la grève, les faits s’estompent dans la vague, et le sergent Moralès, enquêteur dans cette affaire, aurait bien besoin d’un double scotch.

Quand Joaquin Moralès est appelé à enquêter sur la disparition d’une capitaine de homardier, il hésite: son fils vient tout juste de débarquer chez lui, soûl comme un homme qui a tout perdu. Mais lorsque le corps d’Angel Roberts est retrouvé, il ne tergiverse plus, car cette femme, c’est aussi la fille de quelqu’un. La mer, dans ce roman policier poétique, évoque la filiation et la vague brasse les histoires de pêcheurs, véridiques ou réinventées, de Gaspé jusqu’au parc Forillon.
