I’ve not favored using the 25th Amendment as a means for dislodging an unfit president. For one thing, we shouldn’t medicalize behavior for political reasons, and for another, they’ll be no end to claim of mental impairment if we allow the phrase “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office” to become synonymous with poor performance. Moreover, the Founding Fathers had a solution for removing unfit presidents: impeachment in cases of “High Crimes and Misdemeanors.” If read correctly, the impeachment mechanism covers a range of misconduct well beyond illegality.

Nobody should be surprised that President-elect Donald Trump is threatening to throw up tariff barriers, refusing to promise divestment of his business holdings, showing virtually no foreign-policy acumen, putting billionaire cronies in his Cabinet and lashing out against “Saturday Night Live.” If you watched his campaign, you saw that he threatened tariffs, did not set up a blind trust (or release his tax returns), sought out billionaire advisers and attacked late-night comics and the media.

The indictments against Manafort and Gates are detailed here. They include tax charges as well as charges of conspiracy, making false statements and failure to register as foreign agents. The indictment lays out a web of shell companies that allegedly allowed them to conceal income. No mention is made of President Trump or the campaign, but some of the alleged wrongdoing continued “between in and around 2008 and 2017” (paragraph 14 of the indictment).

Attorney General Jeff Sessions apparently convinced President Trump he had no choice but to pull the plug on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, using a phony deadline as the pretext. Stephen K. Bannon and the alt-right may think this was a terrific idea, but the polls say otherwise — as does Trump’s newfound interest in finding a fix to his own political malpractice.

No wonder President Trump and his media allies in the Murdoch empire (not only Fox News but also the Wall Street Journal editorial pages) have been hysterically trying to impugn special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s integrity and demand Hillary Clinton, not the president, be investigated. (Reminder: She was investigated; she is not president.) Some unhinged Trumpists have even egged Trump on to pardon all those involved, a fateful step that would trigger widespread demands for impeachment.

Republicans and Democrats alike have been deluding themselves for some time about White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly. They were certain that Kelly was a “grown-up” who understood that the president the American people elected was hobbled — morally, intellectually, temperamentally — and it was Kelly’s job to steer the ship of state away from the rocks. He wouldn’t lie to the American people as President Trump did, these Kelly fans believed.

Despite the eloquence of former president George W. Bush and Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) — all of whom have discussed the unfitness of President Trump and the unacceptability of Trumpism — we have yet to see a throng of brave Republicans step forward to grab their party back from the president.

President-elect Donald Trump insists on dumping on the intelligence community that he will need to depend upon in less than three weeks. On Tuesday, he falsely claimed that the briefing on Russian hacking was postponed until Friday. (Intelligence officials say it was already set for that date.) He openly mocked the professionals who provide vital intelligence to the country: “The ‘Intelligence’ briefing on so-called ‘Russian hacking’ was delayed until Friday, perhaps more time needed to build a case. Very strange!”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been among President Trump’s most rabid supporters of the travel ban, building a wall on the southern border and a crackdown on so-called sanctuary cities. Meanwhile, he favors heavy-handed techniques such as civil asset forfeiture, which both libertarian-minded conservatives and liberals find unpalatable.

The administration is playing defense, offering contradictory justifications for its abstention at the U.N. Security Council on a resolution declaring everything — including all of East Jerusalem — to be an illegal occupation and virtually inviting boycotts and international sanctions against Israel. Among the strongest critics of President Obama’s decision are Democrats like incoming minority leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) and House minority whip Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.). Even his former Middle East envoy George Mitchell says it was a mistake not to veto the resolution.
