Iodine is a chemical element with the atomic number 53. The body requires iodine, but it can’t produce it. The iodine required by the body must come into one's diet. The quantity found in foods is very small. It has been discovered that processed foods typically have more iodine as a result of the addition of iodized salt. Most of the iodine in the world today is found in the ocean. Its high concentration is in seafood, especially seaweed.
