Ridgwell Cullum, pseudonym of Sidney Groves Burghard, (1867-1943) was a British writer of many adventure novels often set in sparsely populated regions of the USA or Canada.

The listener is introduced to the detective Quentin Locke (based on Houdini), who investigates a cartel protected by a robot called the Automaton and the members of which use a gaseous weapon called Madagascar madness!! The hero is capable of getting himself freed of some of the strangest and most dangerous situations... This is a humorous, fast paced, high octane pulpy adventure by Arthur Benjamin Reeve for diehard fans of the genre!

This is a well told, beautifully observant and tragic tale by Francis Brett Young of a young woman's life, also containing a potentially scandalous relationship between her and a young schoolboy.

A rich woman boards a taxi-cab on a night in the big city. When they arrive at her destination, the driver discovers the woman gone, a suitcase and a male corpse...This is a perfect case for Detective David Carroll; brilliant and somewhat eccentric. As a matter of fact, the same two words could be said about this effective and suspenseful detective yarn by Octavus Roy Cohen!

A story which is both a horror and a New England time period piece by Eleanor M. Ingram. Roger Locke, a composer, buys a farm by a lake in Connecticut, to use as a country retreat... When he meets a mysterious woman at night, he starts getting haunted by a dark force from the lake that claims to own the woman. Does the mysterious lady want to help or to harm? Superb atmosphere and suspense.

This story by Alice Muriel Williamson has its feet firmly planted in a mix of genres, and manages to thrill and entertain in equal measure. A woman in distress, a handsome hero, a dangerous villain, physical action, psychological suspense and real scares all cohabit in this classic tale with quite a bit of a gothic feel to it: "Never, it seemed to me, had I seen a habitation so grim, so silently suggestive of haunting, evil things... The wind moaned through the trees like the wail of a lost soul."

The listener gets transported into a world filled with action, travel, betrayal and greed. The story is complicated and multifaceted involving a journey across the sea, different countries and a potential revolution; but the core of it is of our hero rescuing his girl and trying to find the famous treasure of Eldorado. In this complicated romance, we follow the two main characters from their childhood through to adulthood, all the way experiencing all the many, many challenges and opposing forces to their union. The heroine of this piece, aptly named Conscience; is forced to take on a mighty giant - the puritanical values instilled by her father (a minister) and the society of the older generation - in order to thrive in life as well as in love.

An absorbing, thought-provoking but also marvelously entertaining Western novel by Katharine Newlin Burt. The audiobook manages to make the listener think and feel in equal measure! This is the story of a brave woman - Joan Carver - of modest means, struggling to make her own life, in a world dangerously dominated by all-male forces and desires and impulses.

A kind of post-apocalyptical take by Ellis Meredith on the biblical tale of Adam and Eve, if you will. Only two people have survived a cataclysmic disaster on earth, a man called Adam and a woman called Robin. Will these two decide to try to repopulate the earth? Is it even worth it, considering what happened and how human history has "evolved"? A great blend of fantasy elements and philosophical contemplations makes this work stand out.

This fascinating work by Peter Fisher was published in 1825 when the Province of New Brunswick was still very young; and that's actually what makes it invaluable! The interested listener get's to know - comprehensively and in detail - about things such as the country, settlements, institutions, productions, the climate, inhabitants, the government, towns, trade, revenue, population... Essential stuff for those of us with a very wide range of interests and passions.

This work by Harriet Theresa Comstock is filled with the air and waves of the sea! It richly inhabits the environment, just as its characters do, as well as relying on each other in tough spots. An old-fashioned story of life in a coastal town on Long Island. All is centered around a lighthouse and a life saving station, where Cap'n Billy Daddy works. He also takes care of Janet, whose mother is out of the picture.

Two brothers and a female cousin live in a remote cabin in the wilderness. The oldest brother is hiding from the law because of murder, so the younger brother has to do the trading in town (they are trapping for a living). One day, while Hugh (the convict) leaves the cabin, he meets a girl who is sun blind. He falls in love and uses her temporary blindness to his advantage. The only problem is that his younger brother, Pete, falls for her too.

Welcome to the incredible world of Ambrose Bierce! A true master of the weird, eccentric, macabre and even grotesque horror story. The 24 tales in this collection are no exception. They are often deceptively simple, in the end requiring the listener to re-evaluate what has transpired and realizing that the pieces of the puzzle - often quite dreamlike - makes for something bigger and more sinister than just the finished work.

Mr. Stoughton's vault has been robbed... How did this happen? How come he himself is clueless about how to access it? What is going on with the singing? Or with the stenographer? Nothing in this mess seems to make much sense, but the patient listener will enjoy both the confusion and the resolution, that's guaranteed by author Anna Katharine Green!
