Singer and Hollywood legend Rosemary Clooney on this archive edition of Fresh Air. Clooney starred in the 1954 film White Christmas. She talks about her life as a singer and performer, and you can listen to songs from throughout her career. Her 1999 autobiography, Girl Singer, reads like a who's who from the Golden Age of Hollywood. She also released a CD companion to the book. Its called Songs from the Girl Singer.

Actor Jeff Bridges and singer and songwriter Joe Pernice on this edition of Fresh Air. Jeff Bridges has starred in The Last Picture Show, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Tucker, The Big Lebowski, Seabiscuit and other films. On each of his movie sets he's photographed the action behind the scenes.

Musicians Ray Davis, Marianne Faithfull, Pete Townsend, and Colin Blunstone on this special edition of Fresh Air, "The British Invasion." Ray Davies started The Kinks in 1964 with his brother. They are said to be the pioneers of the rowdy garage band genre of rock music. Their many hits included: "You Really Got Me," "Lola," "All Day and All of the Night," and "Tired of Waiting for you."

Former White House adviser David Gergen on this edition of Fresh Air. Gergen worked with Presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Clinton. He left politics and become a regular analyst on The Newshour with Jim Lehrer and Nightline. He is also editor-at-large at U.S. News & World Report. His new book is Eyewitness to Power: The Essence of Leadership.

He made his film debut as a kidnap victim in Bonnie and Clyde (1967), but he's best known for his work with Mel Brooks in the films Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, and The Producers.

Veteran journalist Bob Woodward and British actor Jeremy Northam on this edition of Fresh Air. Bob Woodward is assistant managing editor of The Washington Post. He's the author of eight nonfiction best sellers including All the President's Men, and The Final Days, about the presidency and The Brethren about the Supreme Court.

Director, co-writer Stacy Peralta on this edition of Fresh Air. Stacy Peralta directed the documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys. The film is about the community of skateboarders in California in the 1970s who originated extreme skateboarding. They did so in rundown urban beach neighborhood near Santa Monica and Venice called Dogtown. They became international stars. Peralta was one of the Z-boys and is considered one of the founding fathers of modern skateboarding.

Dr. Paul Farmer, the subject of a new book, and fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi on this edition of Fresh Air. Farmer is an infectious disease specialist, a medical anthropologist, and a recipient of the MacArthur "genius" grant.

Writer David Sedaris and actor Alan Cumming, on this edition of Fresh Air. Sedaris is best known for his contributing work with public radio's This American Life. He's written three books of essays, Barrel Fever, Naked, and his newest Me Talk Pretty One Day which was just released in paperback. Scottish actor Alan Cumming co-wrote, co-directed, and is co-starring in the new film The Anniversary Party, along with Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Fresh Air rebroadcasts interviews with film editor and sound designer Walter Murch and inventor Robert Moog. Murch re-edited Orson Well's 1958 film Touch of Evil. At the time of the film's initial release the studio remixed the film to Well's displeasure. He fired off a letter with suggested changes. With those notes as their guide, Murch and Rick Schmidlin reconstructed the film to Well's intentions.

Hear singer Frankie Valli and comedian and actor Patton Oswalt on this edition of Fresh Air. There's a new four-CD box set of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons called Jersey Boys. Valli helped bridge 50s doo-wop and 60s rock-and-roll with two dozen top 40 hits, including "Big Girls Don't Cry", "Sherry", and "Walk Like a Man". Jersey Boys is also the name of a Tony award winning Broadway musical based on the lives of the Four Seasons.

Hear German photographer Astrid Kirchherr, rock historian Ed Ward, and linguist Geoff Nunberg on this edition of Fresh Air. Astrid Kirchherr met the Beatles in 1960, before they were famous, when they came to perform in Hamburg, Germany. She took some of the earliest photographs of the group and was engaged to the late Stu Sutcliff, the original bassist for the Beatles.

Hear German filmmaker Werner Herzog and critic Milo Miles on this edition of Fresh Air. Werner Herzog's new film is Rescue Dawn, based on his 1997 documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly. It's the true story of Dieter Dengler, the only U.S. pilot to have sucessfully escaped from a North Vietnamese-controlled prison.

Hear the late Beverly Sills and filmmaker Werner Herzog on this edition of Fresh Air. First, classical-music critic Lloyd Schwartz pays tribute to opera singer Beverly Sills, who died Monday at the age of 78 from lung cancer. Then, we feature a 1985 interview with Sills. Also, film critic David Edelstein reviews Rescue Dawn, the first Hollywood feature film by Werner Herzog.

Veteran actress Angela Lansbury on this archive edition of Fresh Air. She's spent over 50 years in the business on stage, and in film and television. When she was 17 she debuted in Gaslight, and was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Ingrid Bergman's Cockney maid.

Writer Stephen King on this edition of Fresh Air. King has just received the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters at this year's National Book Award ceremony. Author of several best sellers, he is credited with ushering in a whole new era of horror with his first novel, Carrie, published in 1974.

Though Fresh Air has been categorized as a "talk show", it hardly fits the mold. Its 1994 Peabody Award citation credits Fresh Air with "probing questions, revelatory interviews, and unusual insights." And a variety of top publications count Gross among the country's leading interviewers. The show gives interviews as much time as needed, and complements them with comments from well-known critics and commentators.

TV producer Bill Moyers on this edition of Fresh Air. Moyer's new four-part series, On Our Own Terms: Moyers on Dying, explores the way people's lives end in this country.
