The Sorrows of Young Werther is a loosely based autobiographical novel by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It was first published in 1774 and is one of the most famous-and infamous-works in the history of literature. Werther, a sensitive young man falls in love with Lotte, a sweet-natured girl he meets while visitng an idyllic German village. Although Lotte is betrothed to Albert, Werther’s infatuation with her torments him to the point of despair and suicide.

Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, is a poem, translated by Bayard Taylor, which tells the beautiful and emotional story of a man who has seen and done it all. However, despite all of his learning and education, his life still feels empty and unaccomplished. He believes wholeheartedly that there is something else out there. Faust, having exhausted all other fields of study, turns to magic for fulfillment. He summons the devil and makes a pact - that if the devil can show him something rewarding and fulfilling, he will give the devil his soul.

Composed almost entirely of letters written by Werther to his friend Wilhelm, The Sorrows of Young Werther is a heartbreaking narrative about a doomed love. Werther, a young artist driven more by the heart than by reason, is already enraptured with the elusive Charlotte when she marries another man better suited to her class. To keep Charlotte near, Werther befriends her husband - a bid that becomes a torturous reminder of all he's lost.

Wenn Deutschlands größter Dichter und Deutschlands bekannteste Stimme zusammenkommen, so ist das ein großer Glücksmoment für den Hörer. Denn wer könnte Goethes Figuren treffender charakterisieren, seine Sprachkunst funkelnder zur Geltung bringen, seine Gedanken souveräner nachvollziehen als der große Goethe-Interpret Gert Westphal? Es scheint, Goethe hat beim Schreiben dieser Worte schon den König der Vorleser vor sich gesehen.

Mit dieser Aufnahme wird zum ersten Mal in Deutschland der Versuch gemacht, ein großes dramatisches Gedicht der Weltliteratur als Ganzes auf der Schallplatte wiederzugeben: Goethes "Faust" in der dramaturgischen Einrichtung und unter der Regie von Gustaf Gründgens. Es mag daran erinnert werden, dass dies genau 125 Jahre nach der Uraufführung des ersten Teils in Braunschweig (1829) und genau 100 Jahre nach der des zweiten in Hamburg (1854) geschieht.

Aus dem Harenberg Literaturlexikon (2003) zu diesem Text: "Die Differenz zwischen Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre und den Wanderjahren markiert den Übergang vom herausgehobenen Individuum ins Zeitalter der Masse und der Maschine. Goethe vermochte hier die Diagnose der Zeit zu stellen und Therapeutica für die Zukunft zu nennen. Die Wanderjahre nehmen das Ideal der autonomen Persönlichkeit zurück und geben Anweisungen zum tätigen Dasein in der republikanischen Gemeinschaft. Die Ausbildung des Menschen zum sozialen Wesen ist Thema des komplizierten Romans". (S. 1085)

Kompliziert ist der Roman fürwahr; nichts zum Hören "nebenbei". Aber einer der wichtigsten Texte der Weltliteratur.

Buch 1: Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre ist ein klassischer Bildungsroman von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Der wegweisende Entwicklungsroman erschien 1795/96. Er besteht aus acht Büchern, von denen sich die ersten fünf inhaltlich an das zu Goethes Lebzeiten unveröffentlichte Fragment Wilhelm Meisters theatralische Sendung anlehnen.

En esta novela epistolar y semiautobiográfica, se nos narra el desdichado amor del joven Werther por Lotte y las fatídicas consecuencias que de él se derivan. A través de las cartas que Werther envía a su amigo Wilhelm, el lector conocerá todos los detalles de la tragedia desde su inicio: la llegada de Werther a la localidad de Wahlheim, el encuentro con Lotte en un baile y el amor que siente al instante por la joven, que ya está comprometida con Albert. La situación para ese triángulo en principio tan bien avenido se vuelve insostenible con el paso del tiempo...

Dicen que el amor imposible de Werther, que narra la obra, creo una impresionante ola de suicidios entre jovenes impresionables de la epoca. La verdad es que esta conmovedora obra, desde su publicacion se coloco en un pedestal del que no ha descendido.

Le mythe de "Faust" raconte l'histoire d'un homme très cultivé qui cherche à comprendre les mystères du monde qui l'entoure. Un jour, il passe un pacte avec le Diable qui lui promet de lui faire connaître tous ces mystères en échange de son âme. Les deux personnages commencent alors à errer dans le Royaume des Ténèbres, jusqu'à la rencontre de Faust avec Marguerite dont il tombe amoureux et dont il va causer la perte.

Die rational veranlagte Charlotte fühlt sich bald zum pragmatischen Hauptmann hingezogen, während der gefühlvolle Eduard dem Charme Ottilies erliegt.
