Brad Smith’s business gave him special privileges, and he made the most of them. But where do you draw the line? At this peculiar hotel, guests arrived late, stayed even later, and paid a high price for unusual accommodations. And if he were man enough, a guest could meet Janice Westbrook. Brad Smith decided he would win Janice for himself. After all, he was a mattress salesman, with a perfect excuse to make himself cozy around the girl and the hotel. Story
The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar tells the tale of a mesmerist who puts a man in a suspended hypnotic state at the moment of death to see if he can communicate with him after he is dead. While a tale of suspense and horror, it was also, at the time of its publication, a bit of a hoax since it was published without claiming to be fictional, and many took it to be a factual. Poe toyed with this for a while before admitting it was a work of pure fiction.

Joseph Sheridan LeFanu was one of the major figures of 19th centrury supernaturalism. He helped move supernaturalist fiction away from the Gothic's emphasis on external sources of terror and toward a focus on the effects of terror, thus helping to create the psychological basis for supernaturalist and horror lit that continues today.

Story
A main-stay of British children's literature through the 1920's, The Water Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby was written by Rev. Charles Kinglsey as a serial for Macmillan's Magazine in 1862-63.
Although some of the author's opinions seem dated now, the journey of a little chimney-sweep water-baby through rivers and storms, under sea and over icebergs, is still a wonderful adventure tale for children. The book was adapted into an animated film in 1978 and produced as a play at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2003.

In this story, Mrs. Caball, the "grand dame" of a society family, mistakes Lady Carlotta for the governess she has come to meet at the train station. The Lady does nothing to correct her error. On being asked where her luggage is, she reponds that "Someone lost it." One of Lady Carlotta's very excellent rules was "the absent are always to blame". Lady Carlotta throws aside her own plans and becomes a very interesting governess, not at all what the family expected.
