• Special Parent Series: Episode 215 with "Jennifer"
    May 8 2024

For the entire month of May, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Joanna is bringing you a special parent series, where she interviews parents whose children have overcome a variety of mental health challenges. Today’s Success is Subjective episode is a conversation between Joanna and Jennifer Taylor. With a unique perspective as both a mom of a young adult with ADHD and Autism, and as a professional working in the therapeutic world, Jennifer brings great wisdom and insight to parents with children and teens who are struggling. She discusses her son’s journey, explaining that by 9th grade, when he was asked to leave his school, she had a crucial decision to make. Without delay in obtaining the resources her son needed in order to be successful, Jennifer and her now 23 year old son are able to enjoy the fruit of their labor after many years of turmoil. In closing, she encourages parents to befriend their grief and to practice self compassion, while remembering that progression is often incremental and sometimes it’s backward and forward.

    May 7 2024

For the entire month of May, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Joanna is bringing you a special parent series, where she interviews parents whose children have overcome a variety of mental health challenges. Having grown up as an only child, Dawn didn’t know fully what she was in for when she and her husband brought two boys into the world. When her boys were teenagers, they began experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Dawn initially thought that maybe this was just “boys being boys” or “typical teen stuff.” By his sophomore year, one of Dawn’s sons was experimenting with harder drugs and an undeniable pattern emerged: a few weeks of sobriety, followed by a bender of a similar length in time with life threatening outcomes. Dawn shares vulnerably with listeners the journey that she and her family have been on and also discusses her book, Chasing Carson, that details the family’s fight for Carson’s sobriety.
