Refs Need Love Too

By: David Gerson
  • Summary

  • An honest perspective from the 3rd team on the pitch... the referees. Through humor, analysis and education, we are slowly changing how people view referees and officials in all sports. We care and have a love for the game as much as any player or coach. Sometimes even more. Youth soccer (proper football) is a multi-billion $ industry in the US. Tremendous money is spent on players, competitions, travel etc., but almost nothing spent on developing the next generation of referees. I hope that this Podcast inspires, educates and humanizes the next generation of referees for their own development and appreciation from the players, coaches and spectators they need to work alongside.

    Jun 22 2024

What happens when a seasoned referee takes on the concrete pitches of New York City for the first time? Buckle up as I share my thrilling refereeing adventures, starting with a heartwarming reunion with high school friends and a deep dive into the world of New York soccer. Navigating the ins and outs of officiating in NYC, I provide valuable tips for referees looking to expand their horizons, from coordinating with the Eastern New York Referee Association to managing the logistics of an interstate trip. My experience offers a roadmap for seizing new opportunities and overcoming the jitters that come with officiating in unfamiliar territory.

Meet Jenna and Adham, two extraordinary young referees who left a lasting impression with their ambition and professionalism. In this episode, I recount our collaborative efforts at Randall's Island, a venue where respect and sportsmanship shone brighter than the city's skyline. Amidst the unique quirks of refereeing in New York—unmarked corners and the preference for cash payments—we forged a camaraderie that transcended the pitch. Plus, a delightful interaction with Jenna's family adds a personal touch to an already enriching experience, highlighting the human connections that make refereeing so rewarding.

But the adventure doesn't stop there. Picture this: a serendipitous high school reunion amidst 1100 peers, an impromptu subway detour, and the electric atmosphere of the Copa America opening match. Sporting our referee kits, we mingled with fans, caught the eye of international media, and even snagged a spot on the jumbotron—all while witnessing Messi's magic up close. This whirlwind day, filled with unexpected connections and unforgettable moments, encapsulates the exhilarating highs that come with the referee's journey. Tune in for a tale of passion, perseverance, and the beautiful game that brings us all together.
