• Knee on Trac Solution for Your Knee Pain
    Mar 18 2020

Knee Pain is a huge problem for many Americans. Advil or Aleve offers temporary relief at best. Sadly, covering up the knee pain allows the problem to wear away the menicus that separates the femur and tibia.

Core Health Darien has a solution. It is called the Knee on Trac Solution. This knee pain program involves rehydrating the meniscus. This allows the meniscus to regain it's cushioning properties, thereby decreasing the pain in the knee.

The program also deals with chronic knee pain by using Horizontal Therapy to stimulate cellular regrowth of the cartilage in the meniscus. Together these therapies provide significant relief from knee pain.

Many people have tried the Synvisc injections. These do offer temporary relief of knee pain, typically they last only a few weeks. Then they have to be re-administered for a maximum of 3 rounds of injections.

We feel that if you want to avoid knee surgery that the Knee on Trac Solution is your best opportunity to live free of knee pain.

  • Help for Aging Knee's
    Mar 19 2020

Viscosupplements for OA of the Knee: Help for Achy Knee's as we get older

Here is a familiar scene to many Americans over the age of 50. You play softball and afterward. along with that cold beer is an ice bag over that bad knee. Perhaps you walk 18 holes on a sunny afternoon, by the time you get to the clubhouse you are feeling that knee pain. Certainly blame it on getting old but what can you do?

If you are like most people a few Advil or Aleve and ice quieted the pain of osteoarthritis in your knee. You bought more time. The knee pain will probably come back. So what are your options? You can try a steroid injection. Cortisone shots commonly cause a temporary flare in pain and inflammation for up to 48 hours after the injection. After that, your pain and inflammation of the affected joint should decrease and can last up to several months. However, the injected cortisone medication can crystallize inside the body. The crystals can cause pain and inflammation that is worse than the pain and inflammation caused by the condition being treated.

There are viscosupplements which are doses of hyaluronic acid that are injected into the knee and into the synovial fluid. This is a relatively new form of treatment for knee pain. Its level of effectiveness in pain relief varies from person to person. People with osteoarthritis of the knee have lower levels of hyaluronic acid in their synovial fluid. The aging process reduces the levels of synovial fluid. The amount that does remain in the joint is often thinner and less effective than the synovial fluid in healthy joints. The fluid is not able to protect the cartilage and bone from grinding and damage as well as it once could.

Where do we get hyaluronic acid? Hyaluronic acid is often made using sterilized rooster combs, the fleshy crown on top of a rooster’s head. People who have a known or suspected allergies to chicken, poultry, and eggs should avoid receiving viscosupplements derived from avian sources in order to avoid a potential allergic reaction. There are some newer synthetics coming to market. The more popular ones are Synvisc,Orthovisc, Euflexxa, and Supartz. Depending on the condition of the knee, the benefits can last from a few days to more than 6 months. It is important to note that the effects of the shot are temporary. They do provide relief from knee pain due to osteoarthritis, which is a good thing if you have

Knee on Trac Solution for Knee Pain
    Core Health Darien
    551 Post Road
    Darien CT 06820

Knee pain due to osteoarthritis affects millions of Americans. Recently, a new therapy, known as Horizontal Therapy, was incorporated at Core Health Darien. This machine (ProElec DT 2000) has been a breakthrough in electromedicine, combining all known forms of electromedical therapy, in addition to this new revolutionary therapy. It is the most sophisticated form of electrotherapy available.

A German company, Hako-Med, engineered and manufactured this advanced unit to create a unique electrotherapy treatment concept called Horizontal Therapy. The field of electromedicine has evolved over the years and provided us with electrical muscle stimulation, TENS therapy, microcurrent, interferential therapy, and other forms. Each of these methods of electrotherapy has a particular role in treating a variety of conditions, but none of them approach the therapeutic effects which are combined in the PRO ElecDT 2000 with Horizontal Therapy.

Communication between cells takes place in two ways: bioelectrically and biochemically. Whether the cells are in bone, muscle, ligament or nerve tissue, communication occurs via electrical currents and chemical messengers. When cellular communication is impaired, pain and disease occur, so that the normal functional state is lost. This causes a further breakdown in cellular communication.

Up til now, either the bioelectrical or the biochemical communication could be enhanced with electrotherapy at one time, but, not both at once. With Horizontal Therapy, both bioelectrical and biochemical components can be treated all in one treatment session. By holding the bioelectric intensity constant while changing the frequency, Horizontal Therapy can have a broad spectrum physiologic effect. The PRO ElecDT 2000 preset programs are designed to do this automatically.

What Types of Conditions Are Treated with Horizontal Therapy?

Conditions such as knee pain, low back pain, neck pain, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, overuse injuries, various kinds of headaches, muscle spasm, nerve pain, joint swelling, inflammation and many other conditions can be effectively treated with

  • Peripheral Neuropathy Help Greenwich and all of Fairfield County
    Mar 26 2020

Peripheral neuropathy refers to the conditions that result when nerves that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord from and to the rest of the body are damaged or diseased.

The peripheral nerves make up an intricate network that connects the brain and spinal cord to the muscles, skin, and internal organs. Peripheral nerves come out of the spinal cord and are arranged along lines in the body called dermatomes. Typically, damage to a nerve will affect one or more dermatomes, which can be tracked to specific areas of the body. Damage to these nerves interrupts communication between the brain and other parts of the body and can impair muscle movement, prevent normal sensation in the arms and legs, and cause pain.

Neuropathy@CoreHealth is Fairfield County's leading provider of peripheral neuropathy relief care. We have a video describing PEMF for Neuropathy that further explains this part of our treatment. It is one of the many ways we help people with chronic nerve pain. We offer monthly neuropathy support group meetings in our office at no charge.

  • Dr.Brian will my back pain go away?
    Mar 29 2020

Will Your Low Back Pain Go Away?

The simplest answer is yes, your low back pain will go away. Not comes the what if's. Low-grade back pain from a muscle strain will probably go away on its own after a few days of rest, heat, and Advil or Aleve. If there is an underlying reason more complicated then muscle pain the low back pain will probably come back again soon. What typically happens to people is that they feel that when they have no back pain they have no problem. This is erroneous thinking on their part.

The lower back is a mechanical marvel. So is a car for that matter. Do you expect your car to run well when it gets older? Do you take care of your car? Do you take better care of your car then you do for your body? The point I am trying to make is that your back is mechanical. Having said that it should be easy to understand that mechanical things break down. Even when you take good care of them.

Small traumas over a lifetime can add up to big problems as we age. What happens when you neglect your car? It will cost you in the long run. You fail to maintain your body and it costs you on the long run. The car and your spine are mechanical. The absence of pain does not mean you are healthy, it means that you are pain-free. Being free of back pain is a good thing. Ignoring the lower back pain by continuing to take NSAIDs just means you pay a higher price when your back really breaks down.

If you want to avoid a herniated disc then you would be well advised to seek out a chiropractor to address your lower back pain. Yes, I am biased because I am a chiropractor. You should also think about seeing a physical therapist for low back pain especially in the early stages. Chiropractic care is important to move the vertebra causing a pinched nerve. Physical therapy and good exercise can prevent the vertebra from going out of place. Regular exercise and stretching will go a long way to preventing a back problem

The reality is that most of us will have back pain. Most of the time it will go away on its own until it doesn't. Then you have more work to do to get back on track. Everything mechanical can and will break down at some point, your lower back is no exception.

  • Low Back Pain in Pregnancy a Common Sense Approach
    Mar 30 2020

    Back Pain During Pregnancy
back pain during pregnancy'Most pregnant women experience back pain, typically starting in the second half of pregnancy. Most women feel pain in their lower back, in the posterior pelvic region or lower lumbar region.

Posterior pelvic pain is the more common of the two and is a deep pain felt below and at the sides of the waistline, on one or both sides of your buttocks or at the back of your thighs. It can be experienced on one or both sides of your body.

Lumbar pain occurs in the area of the lumbar vertebrae in your lower back, at and above the waist in the center of the back. The pain may radiate to your leg. Lumbar pain during pregnancy feels similar to lower back pain you may have experienced before you were pregnant.

Back pain during pregnancy can range from mild pain caused by specific activities to acute back pain that can become chronic back pain over time. Women with pre-existing lower back problems or chronic pain are at a higher risk for back pain, and their back pain can occur earlier in pregnancy.

How Often Does Back Pain During Pregnancy Happen?
Back pain during pregnancy is extremely common. It is estimated between 50 and 70 percent of pregnant women experience back pain.

What Are Some Symptoms of Back Pain During Pregnancy?
The symptoms of back pain during pregnancy are very similar to the symptoms of back pain prior to pregnancy. Some of the symptoms include:

Pain in the center of your back
Pain above or at the sides of the waistline
    Pain over the pubic bone
Pain in the buttocks or thighs
Pain that can radiate to the legs
Stiffness or discomfort after sitting or standing for long period of time
What Are Some Causes of Back Pain During Pregnancy?
There are several reasons why you may experience back pain during pregnancy. Sone of the most common causes include:

Weight gain: As you gain weight during pregnancy, the spine has to support that added weight. That change causes lower back pain. The weight of the growing baby and uterus can also put pressure on the blood vessels and nerves in the pelvis and back, causing pain.
Changes in hormones: During pregnancy, your body releases

  • CIPN Chemo Induced Peripheral Neuropathy Dr.Brian McKay from Neuropathy@CoreHealth
    Mar 31 2020

    CIPN Chemo Induced Peripheral Neuropathy

CIPN symptoms vary from patient to patient, but in general, side effects include: feeling of numbness or "pins and needles" in your hands and feet; difficulty picking up an object or buttoning clothing; ringing in your ears or loss of hearing; changes in vision; sudden, stabbing pains in your hands or feet; constipation/difficulty urinating; muscle weakness or cramps; loss of balance or having difficulty walking; and feeling heat and cold, more or less than usual. All can add up to peripheral neuropathy.

Specific types of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery can cause damage to nerves that can lead to neuropathy Patients with pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes or peripheral vascular disease, may already have neuropathy as a result of these diseases. If you already have neuropathy and are starting cancer treatment, speak to your team about your specific symptoms.

Certain chemotherapy drugs that are more likely to cause neuropathy
    Carboplatin
    Cisplatin
    Oxaliplatin
    Taxotere (docetaxel)
    Jevtana (carbazitaxel)
    Velban (vinblastine)
    Vincristine
    Vinorelbine
    Etoposide

Chiropractic care along with physical therapy are some of the most effective treatments for neuropathy — it can help with balance, strength and safety. Occupational therapy can also be beneficial and can help patients improve fine motor skills like buttoning shirts.
