  • Summary

  • Welcome to How To: Manage Your Mind

Episode 05 - How To: Talk About Suicide with Dr Joe Anderson PHD

Dr Joe Anderson is a health anthropologist, musician and yoga-meditation teacher from Scotland. He has used his PhD in Social Anthropology to investigate topics such as masculinity and violence in the gun rights movement in the US and in 2021 he joined an inter-disciplinary team at the University of Edinburgh looking at the issue of suicide in Scotland. In this episode, John and Joe ask how we, as individuals and communities, can have more meaningful conversations about suicide, how we can hold space for people considering or affected by suicide, and why both empathy and agency are critical to giving people hope amidst despair.

Joe is also the author of 'Gun Rights Activists and the US Culture War', which you can purchase by following this link and use the discount code EFLY01:. https://www.routledge.com/Gun-Rights-Activists-and-the-US-Culture-War-Embodied-Fantasies-of-the-Ethical/Anderson/p/book/9781032560038

Hi, I’m John, and we have something in common: a mind…

Six years ago I unexpectedly hit a major mental brick wall. I had no idea what it was or how to deal with it. Ever since I’ve been on a journey to learn all about the mind and how to manage it.

Through therapy, talking circles, deep (deep) conversation, mindfulness meditation, spirituality, personal research and much more besides, I’m fascinated with how people maintain their mental wellbeing.

Join me as I explore what it is we can do in the minutes, hours, days, months and years that make up our extraordinary lives to stay motivated, engaged and at peace with the world we live in.

John is a father, husband, co-founder of the mental wellbeing collective The Men Who:, ambassador for the Joshua Nolan Foundation and constant source of curiosity.
