From British army to consulting and entrepreneurship with Mark Machin

  • Summary

  • Ep. 60: We’re figuring out how to make a BIG career change

I’m so excited for you to listen to this one. I had the privilege of interviewing my friend, Mark, who shares his story of moving from England to Canada with his family, and completely pivoting out of his successful military career.

In this episode, we talk about:

+ Mark’s military service and operational tour of Afghanistan

+ How and why he and his wife decided to leave everything behind and move to Canada (including both of their very successful military careers)

+ How he made the transition into consulting…and how humility helped his cause

+ The power of transferrable skills (and a British accent)

+ The questions to ask yourself when you’re contemplating an industry change

    About Mark Machin

Mark is a futurist, strategist and integrator. Having transitioned out of military service and emigrated to Canada in 2020 from the UK, he has spent past 3 years creating a portfolio career, combining the best of his passions.

With an engineering and strategy consulting hat on at GHD, he helps clients shape investment opportunities for mega capital interventions in the areas of water, energy, and community development.

Alongside, Mark owns and operates Uncharted Company, a multidisciplinary sports agency, focussed on major events and sports media. And for a complete change of scene, he is also a part-time ski instructor at Cypress Mountain.

Mark has a notable record of decorated military service, including an operational tour of Afghanistan in 2013. Mark's expertise spans strategy and operations, engineering, technology, infrastructure, and sports, with significant experience in Indigenous community projects.

Finally, faith is a big part of his life, and he gives a lot of time and energy to Trinity Central, a family-friendly church based on Cambie Street. Mark lives in North Vancouver with his wife Katrina and son Monty.
