Episode 125 | Deep Purple 'Machine Head'

  • Summary

  • On April 22nd, 1972 Deep Purple scored their second UK No.1 album with 'Machine Head'. In the US it reached #7. It's often cited as a major influence in the early development of the heavy metal music genre. Commercially, it remains Deep Purple's most successful album thanks to some iconic tracks like "Highway Star", "Space Truckin'" and the song that features the mother of all guitar riffs - "Smoke On The Water".

This album is much more than its hit radio singles, however. This is a band at its creative peek. What's most impressive is the songs were written and recorded at a lightning fast pace and in extremely unconventional surroundings.

In this episode we'll take you through the band's early history and what led up to the 'Machine Head' album. We'll also get into the creation of the seven songs from the album along with one that was ultimately left off called "When A Blind Man Cries". Plus, hear some of the tracks broken down in the studio and comments from the band members from the excellent 2002 "Classic Albums" documentary on the album.
