  • Episode 126 - Bob Seger 'Against The Wind' Album
    May 1 2021
On May 3rd, 1980 Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band started a six week run at number one on the US album chart with 'Against The Wind'.

By the time he entered the studio to record 'Against The Wind' in 1979, Bob's decade long run of constant recording and touring had finally paid off. In the spring of 1976 he released 'Live Bullet', his first release with The Silver Bullet Band. It reached the top 40 and went five times platinum in the US. He followed with his ninth studio album, his first with The Silver Bullet Band - 'Night Moves', in October of' '76. Thanks to the hit singles "Main Street", "Rock and Roll Never Forgets" and "Night Moves" the album reached #8 on Billboard and sold six million copies in the US. 1978's 'Stranger In Town' was another huge hit, six times platinum, a #4 placing on Billboard and four more hit singles - "Still The Same", "Hollywood Nights", "We've Got Tonight" and "Old Time Rock & Roll".

But 'Against The Wind'’s commercial success topped that of all Bob Seger’s previous records and it remains the bestselling album of his career.

In this episode we'll explore the ten tracks that made the album, one that was almost used for a Tom Cruise film, two songs that didn't end up on the album, the famous Seger friends who contributed and a whole lot more.

  • Episode 125 | Deep Purple 'Machine Head'
    Apr 24 2021
On April 22nd, 1972 Deep Purple scored their second UK No.1 album with 'Machine Head'. In the US it reached #7. It's often cited as a major influence in the early development of the heavy metal music genre. Commercially, it remains Deep Purple's most successful album thanks to some iconic tracks like "Highway Star", "Space Truckin'" and the song that features the mother of all guitar riffs - "Smoke On The Water".

This album is much more than its hit radio singles, however. This is a band at its creative peek. What's most impressive is the songs were written and recorded at a lightning fast pace and in extremely unconventional surroundings.

In this episode we'll take you through the band's early history and what led up to the 'Machine Head' album. We'll also get into the creation of the seven songs from the album along with one that was ultimately left off called "When A Blind Man Cries". Plus, hear some of the tracks broken down in the studio and comments from the band members from the excellent 2002 "Classic Albums" documentary on the album.

    TRACKLISTING:

    SIDE ONE:
    1. "Highway Star"
    2. "Maybe I'm a Leo"
    3. "Pictures of Home"
    4. "Never Before"

    SIDE TWO:
    1. "Smoke on the Water"
    2. "Lazy"
    3. "Space Truckin'"
