Clutching Our Pearls: Podcast for a Revolution

By: Marie Hale & Suzi Shattuck
  • Summary

  • Women have lost jobs, career status, a year of our lives, and damn near lost our minds to The Shecession. Marie Hale, CEO and sales and marketing visionary, talks with feminist leaders in all sectors about the atrocity of it all and how the hell we are going to bail out 7 million burned-out moms.

    ---------------------

Young women have been told for the last thirty years or so that if we really want it and we work hard enough, we can have it all: career, family, financial independence. But for all the progress we’ve made, 2020 slapped us with a brand new feminine recession. The options for building a family and a career weren’t great before, and now they’ve all but disappeared. Suffice it to say, we’re mad as hell!

As a CEO, sales and marketing veteran, single mom and now homeschool headmistress, Marie Hale has been through the wringer more than once. This time, she funneled her anger into not just a new business, but a new business model. In the last months of 2020, Marie did her mad-scientist entrepreneur thing and founded fwd@revolution for women and others who have been disenfranchised by corporate America. But she’s not done rattling cages yet--this visionary is seeking out our country’s brightest feminist thinkers, leaders, and doers across all disciplines for some real talk on what needs to change--now.

Hold onto your pearls, because Marie’s asking the tough questions: Who’s to blame for all this? What’s a lady got to do to get subsidized childcare? And what are we gonna wear when we dance in the flames? Tea will be spilled, and voices will be shrill. In this house, our guests are more than welcome to let their hair down and get a little unladylike. (Be warned, at times the language may get too spicy for little ears!)

As our country recovers economically and culturally from everything that went wrong in 2020, those of us who have been marginalized will not go back to silence. We are on the verge of a work/life revolution, and the more diversity and inclusion we have in our ranks, the more equitable, successful, and long-lasting our new systems will be. We need everyone to look within themselves and really challenge their most deeply held beliefs about what they’re allowed to do and what they really want. Because we’re ready to push the limits. Are you with us?

The past few years have done nothing if not make us feel disempowered. We have lost our rights, our sense of security, and our choices. Samantha Karlin, feminine leadership guru and general legal badass, knows how to facilitate change and that’s exactly what she is doing. This is a lively conversation about the constructs of our political system, the patriarchal norms, and moving into action. Remember, feminism isn’t about empowering women only - it’s about creating equity across the board.

Samantha Karlin is the CEO of Empower Global, which facilitates training on DEI and gender issues for Fortune 500 companies.

Empower also runs a groundbreaking women’s leadership challenge for small groups of women leaders from around the world. Some of Empower’s clients include Slalom, Hiscox, Verizon, Amazon, Insight Partners, and beyond.

She speaks and does training all over the world, including at Harvard University, Tufts University, IE University, and Indian Institute for Management, and is a TEDx speaker. She is also the host of Samanthropolitics, a cutting-edge talk show about global politics and women’s rights, where she interviews DC heavyweights about foreign policy.

Previously, Samantha led global engagement for a Silicon Valley tech company, led Ash-o-ka’s programming with women social entrepreneurs, built coalitions for the Hillary for America campaign, and managed the women’s issues portfolio for the US Embassy in Sarajevo, BiH. Ms. Karlin holds a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy with a specialization in global gender analysis and conflict resolution from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.  She is a trained mediator and speaks Spanish fluently.   She has been published in the Washington Post, Conscious Company Magazine, and Women2.0, and is a New America expert.

  • How hot is your pot?
    Aug 31 2022

This week on Clutching our Pearls we are joined by Jody Milward, the self-described “accidental entrepreneur”. Rather than returning to a traditional 9-5 office job after having kids, Jody wanted something else. But what came next wasn’t clear, Jody went on to explore various roles from being a Private Investigator to her current area of expertise of digital marketing where she now generates over 7 figures in revenue! Jody has also gone on to give back to others looking to build success for themselves, teaching students how they can go on to make 6 figure a year managing Facebook ads.

Jody, like many women who return to the workforce after having kids, was tired of the typical office work life. The challenges of a lack of flexibility and limited paths toward success led her to take on the challenge of being an accidental entrepreneur. It was not an easy experience, from the challenges of breaking into markets & governmental red tape that held her up at various points, but never the less she continued on to create her own successful business. If you are like Jody and are tired of limited freedom, flexibility, and the overall crap that comes with a typical 9-5 then you have got to listen in to discover how you can find success & freedom in becoming your own teacher, boss, and self-made “accidental entrepreneur”.

These two powerful women share their entrepreneurial journey and the joys and struggles of motherhood. Other topics of today’s podcast include Jody’s experiences as an Australian living through the pandemic, strict lockdown protocols, and the loss of her fur baby.

Tune in today to hear Jody’s story of surviving Covid lockdowns in Australia,  entrepreneurship and learn how you can create success in your life.

I feel empowered every time I listen!

What an inspirational podcast! I get goosebumps thinking about some of the meaningful moments from this show. I always feel empowered and inspired at the end of each episode.

This podcast gets into the down and dirty when it comes to business, empowerment, entrepreneurs, and impactful topics. We need more of this! I'm serious, conversations like this are super valuable to me and I believe this is what we need to inspire empowered choices across the spectrum. 2020 was a pivotal time in our world and not one person was left unscathed. This is our opportunity to start talking, exchanging ideas, and becoming inspired to create a new and better reality. This podcast is doing just that!
