There was enough story to keep my interest, but some of the minor plot lines were a bit simplistic, in one case a little unrealistic.

Like a Young Adult Story

I meant to do this review a couple of months ago, but I forgot and got busy. In the meantime, I went through it again and still really like this book. The characters are spot on the situation in story are very believable and well thought out and keep you wanting to read more and the way it’s written is easy and flow right into your brain and paints a great picture. Now the bad part if you’re a Star Trek fan, this is a even better book. It will take on more depth and have more meaning for you. that is not to say you need to be a Star Trek fan to understand it or enjoy it. It’s still a really good book on its own, but if you’re a fan, it will be a little bit more rich and have a little bit more depth.

A much stronger addition to the Strange New Worlds story. As where the first book to accentuate this excellent Star Trek show seemed like it could take place completely separate from the overall timeline, this book takes place distinctly after a specific episode of the show (Ad Astra per Aspera) and relies slightly upon the reader’s existing knowledge of those Season 2 events. Well written and engaging, this tale focuses primarily on Captain Pike and Una Chin-Riley (No.1), switching between their academy days together and the current mission. Appropriate for genuine Star Trek, there’s not a lot of action, but more focus on philosophical, political, and dramatic themes. It’s very good character-building, and, if you enjoy the tv series, this well-constructed and well-told story will interest you.

There was some heavy-handed fan service, but, overall I enjoyed the story. There's more politics than action, but most of the best Trek stories are like that.
