From the New York Times best-selling author of The Fall: The Crimson Shadow comes a compelling and suspenseful tale of politics and power set in the universe of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Elim Garak has ascended to Castellan of the Cardassian Union...but despite his soaring popularity, the imminent publication of a report exposing his peoples' war crimes during the occupation on Bajor looks likely to set the military against him. Into this tense situation come Dr. Katherine Pulaski - visiting Cardassia Prime to accept an award on behalf of the team that solved the Andorian genetic crisis - and Dr. Peter Alden, formerly of Starfleet Intelligence. The two soon find themselves at odds with Garak and embroiled in the politics of the prestigious University of the Union, where a new head is about to be appointed. Among the front-runners is one of Cardassia's most respected public figures: Professor Natima Lang. But the discovery of a hidden archive from the last years before the Dominion War could destroy Lang's reputation.

As Pulaski and Alden become drawn into a deadly game to exonerate Lang, their confrontation escalates with Castellan Garak - a conflicted leader treading a fine line between the bright hopes for Cardassia's future and the dark secrets still buried in its past.

For anyone who enjoys Garak’s character from Deep Space Nine will definitely enjoy this novel!

A very enjoyable read

This is a great (almost) ending for Garak. After this, read Second Self - which is a wonderful bookend to the character

A Great (almost) Ending for Garamond

It's an alright story. I really like Garak and DS9. The performance was good but the story was a little boring. A lot talking and character development mostly. It was definitely interesting but I think it was cut fast and short near the end. Would be a good series to continue I think. I do recommend it if you're interested in the Cardassians

Good performance. Kind of a stale story

Great story about the after effects of the Dominion War. Cardassia destroyed and rebuilt. Dr. Polaski is as witty as ever. and then of course theres Garak.

Garak!

A wonderful continuation which needs to be canon and appreciated. More works like this would be wonderful.

Excellent!!

there is a little political Intrigue in this book but truthfully this is more about being able to spend time with the characters. don't pick this up if you're looking for something with action. but if you love Garrick you shouldn't miss this one. heck I've always hated Catherine Pulaski and now I actually kind of like her. the biggest surprise is just how much better Julian Bashir is when he's in a constant vegetative state. I honestly enjoy the fox quite a bit.

For Garrick fans.

Far better story than the new star trek shows in all their garbage ways . Definitely worth a listen.

Great book

I just finished listening to the audio book version of Una McCormack’s excellent “Enigma Tales.” I laughed, I cried, I reflected deeply, and I was deeply moved. The imagery of the figure in black moving away into the shadows and the figure in white moving toward the light to greet the people had me in floods of tears. I loved the letters. I loved Professor Lang’s story line that made her a deeply influential citizen and not simply “Quark’s girlfriend.” I loved Kate “Kitty” Pulaski’s story line and I loved Antok. I loved the book so much that I am listening to the audio book again and ordering the paperback so I can read words on the page. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

An Excellent Book, a Must Read for Niners!

Over all this is a good book. It keeps a constant pace and it doesn’t get boring. Each character is well defined and you understand their motivations. It is well read but I don’t think he got Garak right. All the other characters have a distinct voice and are performed very well. I just wish that they explained what happened to Bashir.

Not to bad.

This was a wonderful story. It painted a wonderful picture of the post-war Cardassia. The political intrigue and plots were well done but not overly detailed or heavy. The story is a study of a people trying to acknowledge a brutal past of war atrocities; the desire to bring war criminals to justice; while not opening old wounds that may break the new peace. I
came away from the story with a greater appreciation for a formal Cardassian tailor.
