So Happy To Have Kate Mulgrew Read “Her” Story

I read the Kindle version of this book when it first came out and loved it. I was so excited to see the autobiography of Captain Kathryn Janeway available as an audiobook; added to my excitement was the fact that Kate Mulgrew was narrating the book and it was wonderful to listen to it with her voice. She did a perfect job of course, because nobody else could be the Captain of Voyager.

Immersive and satisfying

As a life long fan of Voyager and Kate Mulgrew this book perfectly wrapped up the story of Voyager and gave some very wonderful, if not totally unexpected, punctuation to many stories not told after the season seven finale.

loved this

I always loved Captain Janeway, and having the captain herself narrate this was the only way to go. it was like sitting down and listening to Kathryn talk about her life.

Don't expect it to include the newer Voyager relaunch novels, it goes a bit past the end of the show but does not include those novels as canon.

any fan of Voyager should listen to this. I will be listening to it again for sure.

Great narrator, terrible story.

It was great that Kate Mulgrew came on board to narrate this, though after listening to the story, I wish she hadn't. It's full of massive plot holes and completely skips over Janeway's time as a first officer while butchering Tuvok's backstory. It seems lazily written with little thought given to the character, her journey or her story.

Kate and Kathryn make a terrific team

I was delighted to hear about The Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway. And who else but Kate Mulgrew could have read it. The autobiography was a stellar story that followed Kathryn through her early life, past Voyager's triumphant return to what happened to her and her crew after their homecoming. I enjoyed revisiting old friends and learning more about their time together. I do have a mild rebuke concerning the idyllic great life Kathryn lived. It was hardly believable that anyone's life could be so magnificent, but perhaps life is really significantly different in the 24th century...We can always hope! My final comment is that Kate's reading lacked an emotional connection. She sounded like she was reading a novel, not telling her inspiring life story.

Amazing. Simply amazing.

The entire book was captivating, and it was an absolute joy to hear Kate Mulgrew’s voice as Kathryn Janeway. I could hardly stop enjoying what this book had to offer, as it gave me hope and perspective with every chapter. I look forward to listening to it again and again.

Loved it!

I'm such a huge fan of Star Trek Voyager, and growing up Kathryn Janeway was an idol for me. What a cool experience to hear about her life before and after Voyager, especially narrated by Kate Mulgrew! I don't think I could've listened to it as an audio book without her telling it. Would definitely recommend if you love the show as much as I do.

There’s plenty of coffee in the book!

Yep, there’s plenty of coffee in the book! Our Captain makes sure of that!
It’s lovely to hear in Captain Janeway’s own words the story of her life, how she grew up & what happened to her before Voyager.
It’s also great to hear her thoughts and feelings of their time in the Delta quadrant, what happened there & their journey home.
It’s reminded me of a few episodes that I want to go back and rewatch.
The last couple of chapters really add to the story of The End Game, so that as the reader/listener we feel like we see more of what happened to the crew after their return home.
Especially great that it’s read by the Captain herself, aka Kate Mulgrew. Really well presented and really enjoyable.

Loved this!

I absolutely loved listening to Kate Mulgrew bring Kathryn Janeway to life again after recently watching the Star Trek Voyager series for the first time.

Una McCormack deserves big kudos for this as she captures this well-beloved character and captain with crystal clear accuracy, first with the account of Janeway's home and family life, later extending into her experiences at the Star Fleet Academy and her first commissions about star ships before she took up her position of Captain aboard Voyager.

In this autobiography one learns about Kathryn Janeway not only as one of Star Trek's best known and best loved characters, but also as a daughter, sister, aunt, partner, friend, mentor and leader. She is human, first and foremost, and with all her admirable qualities that mark her as exceptional she is also prone to weaknesses and imperfections and a number of regrets along the way.

Fans will probably love this, and I know I will most probably go back for another listen before too much time has passed. An excellent, compelling, addictive listen - I can't recommend this highly enough to fans of Star Trek in general, or Voyager in particular.

What a pleasure. I’ve missed voyager!

So lovely to be back reminiscing about Voyager with none other than Admiral Janeway herself. A truly enjoyable, beautifully written and excellently narrated ‘autobiography’ and Reminiscences of a fantastic Starfleet Captain. Highly recommend to Trek aficionados.

The writer has not read Mosaic

This book was quite good but it completely changed all the history with Mark from the book Mosaic. In this book Kathryn first meets Mark after his first wife’s death but in Mosaic Kathryn and Mark went to the same school and both played tennis. He later went swimming with Kathryn on Mars looking for the body of Kathryn father.
I enjoyed the early life of Kathryn and her family but I think the time in the delta quadrant was a bit rushed. It was a good book but could have been better if only the writer had read Mosaic and had also given more detail of the time in the delta quadrant

Exceptional

What can be said for the amazing Kate Mulgrew reprising her role as the beloved Kathryn Janeway for this amazing look at a characters backstory... well more words and emotions then I could possibly place upon this review, from the swooping highs to lowest of lows you really get a sense of how the younger Janeway flourished and became the Captain we all know and love.

A tear jerker

There's a fine mix of stuff you didn't know about her from before and after the journey home. But the final chapter is the real tear jerker. My favorite part was being able to recall all the moments she talks about on the trip thru the delta quadrant and now ill have to rewatch Voyager for a 3rd time.

Fantastic

Was wonderful to have Kate Mulgrew for this, she was absolutely fantastic!
It was great to be able to have Janeway doing her own biography, helped relive many great memories and moments from the series.
Also got to learn more about some of the central characters and events that weren't covered during Voyager which was awesome.
Highly recommend

Thank you Una McCormack

Absolutely wonderful. Janeway is such an admirable leader and this peek into her life and her motivations is an enthralling read. I struggled to get right into it at first but this is because of my own difficulty with biographies. It's a personal failing but it didn't take long for Kate Mulgrew's outstanding narration to help me overcome it and I was utterly hooked.

For me the most interesting part was about her pre Voyager years and thankfully this took the lion's share of space in the book. It was disappointing that the history didn't match other novelverse accounts but this is a common occurrence with our trek literature so I wasn't surprised in the least and it is nonetheless another fabulous version.

My most anticipated moment occurs near the end of the book and was considerably briefer than I'd have liked but I'm glad that the Tuvix ultimatum was mentioned.

It was fun to run through key Delta quadrant moments but this portion of the novel focused a lot on the growth and experiences of other crew members which took a lot away from my focus on Janeway. There were some lovely insights into how Janeway was feeling during the retold events but this seemed a bit lacking in the focus of this section.

Of course, I was expecting the biography to contain much more post Endgame material and this is probably the only real criticism I'd have of the book. It could mean that we've got a lot yet to learn about Janeway in upcoming TV productions and that the author might have been restricted to not invading on that space. This is likely wishful thinking but I'm alright with maintaining my own delusions.

Everybody is freaking out about the surprise dropped in right on the last page but I think it's a stunning addition.

Fluffy feel good popcorn

I really enjoyed this, it’s my 1st audiobook and I picked it specifically because it was voiced by Kate Mulgrew. It’s a fun story full of moments that make you laugh, Kate’s performance is the thing I treasured the most about this audiobook, and it’s fun learning about Janeway’s early days.

I have 2 minor gripes:

The almost complete focus on Voyager’s time in the delta quadrant leaves me feeling unsatisfied, it’s great to hear her grappling with the morality of splitting Tuvix but this like many other parts of the story are feelings and thoughts that were pretty well explored in the episode. Equinox is another example, but it’s a bit more fleshed out. Too many memberberries, I wanted to know more about what happened off screen, the quiet moments and the things that weren’t the crisis of the week.

I really enjoyed the original writing parts at the beginning and the end, but I desperately wish there was more focus on the post return time. At least 7 and Icheb get a much nicer life in this book than they do in Picard, but it’s not clear when this memoir is being written.

Overall, 8/10. Really enjoyed it, but I probably won’t listen to it again knowing it’s more of a recap of her time in the delta quadrant.
