The people that killed the world were fiendishly clever.

After decades of planning, the contagion was unleashed, and overnight hundreds of millions died and came back as rampaging, undead monsters. The living that had been lucky enough to survive the first day of carnage, lucky enough to be in the right place, and lucky enough that some of them had the skills to survive soon found out there was much more to worry about than just zombies.

In the high desert on the outskirts of Reno, there is an old truck stop frequented by a mix of hard caliber truckers, day tourists, musicians, and travelers. They have survived the chaotic first hours of contact with the undead and now must make their way across the country to a location they believe is safe. Zombies are only the beginning of their troubles as they try to cover the thousands of miles of open road with their hastily armored 18-wheelers. Gunny, a long haul trucker doing one of the few jobs available to him as a disgraced soldier, is unwillingly saddled with the job of getting these survivors to the safe zone. With a motley crew of truck drivers, college kids, veterans, a drug dealer, and a rock star, they are racing the clock to make it before time runs out. The last text he had received from his wife before the cell towers went down told him she was trapped in a high-rise in downtown Atlanta and their son was in detention, stranded in the basement of the school he attended. Gunny just wanted to drop the hammer, steal some guns, and blast his way in to rescue them, but duty called. He had to get these people to safety first, then he could recruit the best of this crew to help him save his family. If they survived the journey.

Omg! So good! Love this one! All the characters are amazing. The writing is great and narration by Shelman was excellent. I read a ton of zombie and post apocalyptic books and this one is definitely one of the best. Can’t wait to read or listen to more in this series.

Would you consider the audio edition of Zombie Road to be better than the print version?

No! But it complements it and brings the characters to life with the different voices.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Gunny is my favourite. I love his commitment to his fellow war vet's, truck drivers and family.

Which scene was your favorite?

The scene with Long Dawg, when he does his thing with the gun! Awesome!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Vet's v Zombies!

Any additional comments?

This is one of the best Zombie books I've read, it is a MUST READ!

Eric A. Shelman nails it!

The narrator here is new to me and I will say that I it took me a while to get used to his cadence and patterns. He's a little slow moving for genre, but as the book moves forward, things settle into a reasonable rythm.

I love a good Zombie outbreak tale and the early days survival struggles as things get going. This book has a few things that are different from the usual Zombie story right from the start that make it interesting. We're dealing with cross country truckers and their equipment. Very nice change of pace. These aren't a bunch of preppers with arsenals stashed in the secret basement room just waiting on the apocalypse - they're just a group of folks at work when it happens. Additionally I liked the idea of the bad guys causing the apocalypse being portrayed as this generation's current bad guys in real life. Folks focused on whether or not the book is politically correct or not have missed the entire point. It's about the element that's declared and literally acted out war upon us in a variety of ways for over a decade being portrayed as the bad guys in a fictional story about.... ZOMBIES. I am ok with this.

However, I will say that I could have done with fewer over the top, silly nicknames for a lot of the characters - Stabby, Firecracker, etc etc etc. Come on. I know a number of actual truckers and most are legit former military vets, but none use CB handle type nicknames in real life. There are a few other plot issues that bothered me a bit, but I'm assuming they will be addressed in book two. Which I started listening to this morning.
