Remi: All I wanted was to be away from the limelight, away from my parents. A perfect place where I could live a simple life. A fresh start. A small beach town. That's what I thought I found, until the tortured ocean-colored eyes of the town outcast catch me off guard.
Everyone warns me to stay away from him. They tell me he's a monster. His eyes tell another story, though, and I need to know what it is. It becomes almost an obsession.
Jacob: A fresh start in a place where no one knows me…or so I thought. This place has become my own personal Hell. That is…until her.
She’s the only one who doesn’t look at me with contempt. She tries to force her way into my life, but she's better off staying away. She doesn’t deserve this life sentence they’ve given me....

Rin reaches in my ribcage and squeezes my heart in a tight fist. The angst was high, tears flowed freely, my arms reaching out to hug Jacob. He seems to be the unluckiest person in the world. wrong place; wrong time and a big chunk of his life is obliterated. He’s locked away for a decade and even after he gets out, he’s being subjected to hate, insults, social exclusion & rumor mongering. My heart broke for him. The way this boy suffered, I wanted to jump in the book and strangle the whole town. They're all nasty, awful people. NOBODY gave him a chance or benefit of doubt.
Till Remi walks in, who’s on her own mission to escape her family’s clutches.
Her generous, kind heart is big enough to compensate for the whole world of injustices. She becomes his world and they don’t need anything. I sat there watching them take tentative steps into each others territory, be comfortable, fall in love and then be torn apart by ghastly circumstances.
Towards the end I was like “Gawwwd give them a break”
Narration by Shiloh James & Robert Hatchett was artful and poignant. Thankful to Rin for giving me this audiobook, I loved her writing so much, I immediately jumped on book 2. Also gifted by her

At 17 Jacob was falsely accused of raping the girl he'd crushed on for some time. He was convicted and sent to prison for ten years. He lost everything and everyone, even his parents believed him guilty, and his supposed friends deserted him.
Upon his release, he tries to move on with his life by buying a home and boat in a small town but because he's on the sex offender registry the people in the town all believe him guilty of the crime and want him gone, none more so than Jolene the owner of the general store. But he's determined to stick it, pretending to be fine, living life alone.
Remi comes from a very different background; she is the daughter of wealthy, prominent parents and wants to start living her own life, not the life mapped out for her as a member of a prominent family. After repeatedly trying to make her parents understand that she's not happy and wants to make her own way, she decides to just leave. She moves to the same small out-of-the-way town as Jacob and buys a house on the beach. She gets a job working at the general store and sets out to live her life on her terms. Being a small town, she soon learns about everyone, including Jacob, whom she is warned to stay away from. But she feels drawn to him; something about him makes her want to befriend him and tells her that things aren’t the way they seem. She persistently pushes herself on him, she joins him on the beach, takes him food and even offers to teach him to cook. Slowly, she worms her way into his life.
Jacob begins to open up to her, for the first time in ten years, he allows himself to believe he has a friend. Remi begins to pull him out of his shell, but when she accidentally learns the truth, she's determined to try and get people to change their minds about him.
This is a heartwrenching rollercoaster ride, my heart bled for Jacob, he suffered so much, and just when he thought he had a chance at happiness, everything was ripped away from him again! As for Remi, I couldn't believe the lengths her parents were prepared to go to to keep her at home as their puppet! I was impressed with how well this difficult subject matter was handled by the author, but that said, I wish that his innocence could have been proven; it would have made their HEA even better.
