Publisher's Summary

Wendy and Rubin are on their way off for a weekend trip to spend with friends in the small, out-of-the-way town of Winward, Colorado. But what should have been time spent reconnecting will instead become something much worse.

Something has happened in Winward. An act of violence which neither Wendy nor Rubin can fully comprehend. And immediately upon arriving in town, they are drawn into a sequence of events completely out of their control. Their lives are about to be turned inside-out, and for an act as innocent as crossing the town line.

The darkness of Winward lurks within.

You Can Check-in but You Can't Check-out

It took me a couple starts to get into the story, but once I was on-board it was a fast-paced horror/thriller. It almost has the slasher movie type feel where it is a horror story, but the tension often becomes more pronounced than the horror itself. I liked how that played out as it kept me on the edge of my seat until I finished it. Much like your typical 80’s slasher movie, the preternatural aspect of the antagonist is unexplained and is left up to your imagination. The small town single road in or out setting really added to the claustrophobia which heightens the anxiety from the cat and mouse game.

As many short stories are, I felt like this was more plot driven versus character. I didn’t think there was much in the way of character development, outside of Wendy. I think you were given enough information about each character to have the right amount of connection with them. This worked well for the story as even the author points out in his notes, happy endings come in different forms.

I enjoyed Rebecca Ortese’s narration. I liked the sound of her voice and really liked her character voice for Daniels.

Fast paced short story

Really enjoyed this book. Short and fun listen. A lot of story squeezed into two hours with a satisfying ending. Narrator was excellent.

Uninteresting.

I tried to like and get into this short story, but I couldn't. Undeveloped characters, unbelievable story, became uninteresting quickly. Really one man, and no communication with anyone,😣. Rebecca Ortese did a nice job with her narration of each characters. Even with that, she still couldn't save this story.☹

Excellent short story!

Winward by Chad Clark was a fun, wild ride. At just over two hours, it was a well-written, complete story that just didn't stop from the very beginning. Wendy and Rubin arrive in Winward to visit some friends and what they find instead is just madness. That's all I'll say about this, as I don't want to ruin the craziness. Definitely a fun listen though!

Rebecca Ortese did a great job narrating Winward. She really added a lot of life to the story with her narration, which is exactly what you want any narrator to do. I'd definitely listen to more stories narrated by her! I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher for an honest review.

Pretty cool short story

The book starts off at a fast clip with tragedy striking right out the gate. Then the meat of the story opens up with a couple rolling into town looking for their college friends. They're inadvertently dragged into a crazy unbelievable encounter with a madman.

Pretty unique story. Fast paced. Just enough shock value to keep you interested and on your toes.

The narrator does a great job with the voices. No complaints there. Very matter of fact voice.

The finish of the story gives you a few twists and turns and feels very horror/slasher movie-esque. While it was short, I don't know that it needed to be any longer.

Scared Visit

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review and all opinions expressed herein are mine.

Here, Wendy and Rubin decide to stop in Winward to visit their old friends. As soon as they arrive, something's wromg. They can't find their friends; it seems the town's deserted; and it's very isolated. Rubin decides to enter tbejr friend's home and almost as soon as he does, Rubin realizes all is not right. Then Rubin discovers the body of his murdered friend - things are definitely not right. A trooper shows up - Rubin and Wendy breathe a sigh of relief but, perhaps all too soon.

This is a good well-written thriller which becomes scarier as you can completely relate to Wendy and Rubin. As their circumstances of being in a strange town where something is off, with no one to help and no way to leave begin to escalate - the pit in your stomach just keeps getting bigger and bigger. My only quibble - and it's minor - is I wish the true circumstances of what was happening in the town had not been revealed so early in the story as not knowing or being unsure of the truth is so much more scary.

The narrator did a great job.

My Only Complaint is that It’s Not Long Enough!

I received this audiobook free at my request and am leaving this review voluntarily.

What an intense wild ride! Winward pulls you in and doesn’t let you go. Quite a gripping short horror story. The narration is great, and the story is perfect. I only wish it had been longer, but it certainly never lets up! Check this one out!

Great Story!

This is a short one, but it's packed with entertainment. Both the author and narrator do a fantastic job.
