C.J. Does It Again

Joe Pickett is a great character and he gives us a honest look of a America few know in States with fewer residents than most big American cities. This is another great ride.

Another satisfying delivery by Box

I'm starting to devour these Joe Pickett books by C.J. Box. As I've mentioned in previous reviews, the narratives are tight and fast-paced, and all of the threads between family, murder, law enforcement at local, state and federal level, wildlife, and other plot issues come together nicely. In Winterkill, Box also demonstrates deft skill in weaving together plot lines from previous books.

Winterkill also introduces a key character in the series - badass ex special forces dude Nate Romanowski. Romanowski, equipped with his black ops training and secret spidey sense from his ability to train raptors, provides a black flag kind of justice when he acts as a sidekick to rule-follower strong silent type Joe Pickett. Romanowski is also bad-boy sexy, and the narrator on the audio books gives him a ferocious growly voice. For fans of James Lee Burke, you'll see parallels between Romanowski & Clete Purcell without the high comedy.

This book introduces some sadistic and incompetent federal government folks, some beat-up refugees from Ruby Ridge & Waco, the worn-out mother of Pickett's foster daughter from book 1, and mysteries within mysteries. We also see quite a lot of Joe's mother-in-law, Missy, who is a shallow but harmless creature so far.

This book was good enough to prompt me download the next in the series and fire it up right away. Very well-crafted and satisfying.
