Publisher's summary

Lord Alaric Wilde, son of the Duke of Lindow, is the most celebrated man in England, revered for his dangerous adventures and rakish good looks. Arriving home from years abroad, he has no idea of his own celebrity until his boat is met by mobs of screaming ladies. Alaric escapes to his father's castle, but just as he grasps that he's not only famous but notorious, he encounters the very private, very witty Miss Willa Fynche.

Willa presents the façade of a serene young lady to the world. Her love of books and bawdy jokes is purely for the delight of her intimate friends. She wants nothing to do with a man whose private life is splashed over every newspaper.

Alaric has never met a woman he wanted for his own...until he meets Willa. He's never lost a battle.

But a spirited woman like Willa isn't going to make it easy....

The first book in Eloisa James' dazzling new series set in the Georgian period glows with her trademark wit and sexy charm - and introduces a large, eccentric family. Listeners will love the Wildes of Lindow Castle!

Light entertainment.

In the beginning, it was quite entertaining. but half-way through, the end was a dead give-away. Not that I expected less than a HEA, but how we got there is very transparent, which is disappointing. The characters are interesting, but the story needs some tightening up. At the end, I was picking apart historical issues for my own amusement. It's a great light listen, ideal for when we don't want a challenging story. I'll think about the rest of the series as they come out, because EJ has proven to be a good writer in past books so perhaps she will get her stride in the 2nd or third.

Susan Duerden has done a good job of narrating, it is well produced.

Might be a great book, ruined by the narrator

The narrator uses the same intonation for every sentence, over and over. It’s hard to follow the story because it’s so distracting. Just awful narration, in a strange, breathy voice, which captures none of the playfulness that is signature to James’s novels.

Very good story

I truly enjoyed this book. There are some great characters and an evil character. The chemistry between the hero and heroine is strong. I enjoyed the part the animals played in the story. I definitely will listen to the next book in the series when it comes out. I am hoping it will be about what happens after the broken engagement of North and Diana. Hopefully the next book will also be narrated by Susan Duerden. She is an excellent narrator.

Read like a newscast :(

The story was often times delightful, a little too predictable and cliche for my tastes, but the narration absolutely ruined any pleasure I would’ve taken from the story. Every sentence ended with a dramatic, unnatural downturn of the voice. Disappointing.

Not my favorite narrator but an entertaining read

I’m an Eloisa James fan, and this first installment of her newest series leaves me looking forward to the next story. I liked the male and female protagonists fairly well. They had good chemistry and were believable. An entertaining read for a rainy afternoon.

My only complaint would be that Susan Duerden has one of the most irritating voices on the planet. I can usually get into a story enough that I don’t notice the sing-song quality of her voice, but it was a challenge with this book. I finally stopped listening and switched to reading.

Horrible narration

I have had to stop listening to this book due to the narrator. I will try and go back to it but the way she ends every sentence is spoiling the story for me and makes it painful to listen to. Should have read this one instead.

Could be better

I did enjoy the book, but I found the narration to be a bit difficult to listen to.. there wasn’t any range to it, and it made me want to stop listening more than once

Another winner

I want to say Eloisa is back. Witty characters with that bit of the bizarre or modern. Narrator sometimes misses gender.

Absolutely hated the narrator

I absolutely hated the narrator she ruined the story for me. she drawled out the last word in every sentence and it felt like she was just reading. The story its self was good the listening to her made me not enjoy the book. I would fall asleep and miss while chapters and didnt even care to go back because I was ready to just hear how it 3nd3d so I didnt have to listen to her anymore. I listen to books all the time literally all the time and am not ever dissatisfied but listening to her was aweful.

Choose a different book

The book was ok but the narrator's droning voice made it difficult to finish. The story itself may have been better if I had read the book. There was little surprise and I found neither character particularly interesting. I liked that the female leads were all smart and witty.
