Acerca de esta escucha

The handsome and charismatic earl of Stratton, Caleb Ware, has been exposed to the ton for his clandestine affairs—by his own son.

As a child, Devlin Ware thought his family stood for all that was right and good in the world. They were kind, gracious, and shared the beauty of Ravenwood, their grand country estate, by hosting lavish parties for the entire countryside. But at 22, he discovered his whole world was an elaborate illusion, and when Devlin publicly called his family to account for it, he was exiled as a traitor.

So be it. He enlisted in the fight against Napoleon and didn't look back for six years. But now his father is dead, the Ware family is broken, and as the heir he is being called home. It's only when Gwyneth Rhys—the woman he loved and then lost after his family banished him—holds out her hand to help him that he is able make the difficult journey and try to piece together his fractured family.

It is Gwyneth's loyalty, patience, and love that he needs. But is Devlin's war-hardened heart even capable of offering her love in return?

"Only one day" RRRR

I like and own many Mary Balogh books but sometimes her tendency to repeat phrases and conversations over and over again drives me bonkers. I wish she would let her editor do some work. Her books would be 5 stars if edited correctly.

Boring, loads of trivial detail and frustrating MMC

The story is loaded with inconsequential detail. The story line is all about one incident that negatively impacts an otherwise great family. Delvin, the future Earl, is portrayed as a rigid, rule abiding character. He is written so that the reader should sympathize with him but, honestly, he had a loving family that he himself implodes. I thought he was a self righteous hypocrite. He blames his father for being unfaithful yet “rule abiding” Devlin sleeps with his leading lady before marriage in garden house as he tells her that he can’t love her. It was frustrating how inconsistent his character behaved. I would pass on this one.

Excellent Read

Another wonderful tribute to a time in history when we believed that life was simpler. We love this series as we are so very easily transported to another time and place and kept there in total captivation. Thank you Mary!

Great beginning to a new family saga

I love Mary Balogh’s books and the characters she creates and build during a series. I can tell that the Ravenswood series will be no exception. No real angst, just human fears and understandable hesitance and worries on the part of well-meaning lovers—and when read by Rosalyn Landor the experience is soothing and comforting and absolutely lovely!

Balogh + Landor = Perfection

My favorite combo. Seriously cannot go wrong with these two. Even with the predictability of the genre, Balogh’s writing keeps you hooked and wanting to hear more. She’s just so engaging and the writing always immersive.

Landor’s performance is as impeccable as always. She inflects emotion, breathlessness, and humor at the perfect moments. I have listened to hundreds (not exaggerating) audiobooks and Rosalyn Landor is in my top 3 narrators.

So far the weakest of the stories

I always like to listen to Rosalyn. And I’ve listen to two other of Mary’s books, but this one was extremely weak. Good storyteller, but we can unless you just want the romance Parton no substance.

Meh

This was similar to the first book in the series. Where the lead male character is such a jerk, there’s barely in a redemption at the middle or end.

So-so

As always Mary Balogh evokes some complicated emotions. But this book has major flaws, not the least of which is that it starts with a 3hr prologue. Of course the author doesn’t call it a prologue, she calls it chapters 1 through 7. But it’s just a long, bland, info-dump, with an insane number of names and details. It’s even worse if you’ve read the blurb, because you know that the love story doesn’t truly start until after a certain ‘truth bomb’ detonates and a SIX YEAR SEPARATION occurs between the hero and heroine.

The love story isn’t a priority in this book. It’s a secondary plot. Don’t expect a sweet intense romance. Devlin (H) and Gwen (h) are a mediocre couple at best. This book is more about the fallout from 'that night' and how each member of the main family changes. Also throw in some: inequality between the sexes, secrets, social façades, and the suffocating rules of propriety in Regency era England.

On the plus side, the scene where Devlin publicly confronts his philandering father is in my top 10 book moments. Why? Because he had zero f*cks to give. He saw a wrong and attacked. I've read SO many books featuring morally grey/villainous characters and I enjoy them. But there's this strange and DEEPLY UNSATISFYING open mindedness in modern lit (even if it's a period piece like this). Maybe it's a sign of the times. idk. But I can't stand the blasé “you do you” kind of attitude everyone has (even the victims). Thanks Devlin for giving your father the PUBLIC freak out he deserved.
