Richie Stevens, a private investigator together with his PA Sandy Smith, have a new case to solve; their client is odd, everyone thinks so - but Richie prefers to make up his own mind. The story she's told to the police is that her husband Jason Rayner disappeared while they were on a cycling holiday in Devon. The local police are of the opinion that he's left her but Richie takes the case with the strong feeling that the answer is not as clear cut as it appears. For a start he can find no one who has seen Rayner and as his investigation progresses he begins to wonder how much of his client's story is the truth and what is pure imagination.
