Ten years ago he killed my son. Today I married him. Ten years ago my darling son Jesse was murdered and our perfect family was destroyed. My strong, handsome boy, so full of life, became a memory, a photo I carried with me everywhere. But today I’m finally close to finding happiness again. My ash-blonde hair has been curled into ringlets. Carefully placed white flowers frame my delicate features. The small, drab chapel has been prettied up with white satin, and there are tiny red hearts scattered on the small table where I will soon sign the register with my new husband.

*SPOILER-ISH REVIEW*
I don't mind reading stories about bad people, but the writing, the plot, and the dialogue need to be spot on. And they need to have self-awareness of their own character.
This book was pretty much all bad people with NO self-awareness, bad dialogue, and a long, boring, drawn out story. I think David was written to be somewhere on the spectrum. Can't be sure as he was also a stalker with delusions and anger issues. Holly was a manipulative psycho. She was also an unreliable narrator but whether or not she knows the truth about Evan is unclear, even at the end(even though a quick Google search could've shown her the truth).
I won't be reading this author again. I'm just not into her style, which is to create a "mysterious" past which is revealed little by little in flashbacks.

meh...haven't we heard this ending before?
Promising and interesting right up til the end! the characters are VERY similar to characters from another of Slaters books and this ending is very similar as well! So disappointed in the ending and some missed opportunities to build suspense with all those suspects on the peripheral.

very far fetched!
love the narrator (who I think does all of the books by Slater). This book starts off really engrossing. lots of good character development and really suspenseful situations... then the last 30% is, frankly, really unbelievable. i usually really like Slater's books, and I know some of her others have quite far fetched endings, but this one was just... too much. To the extent that I completely lost interest.

Terrible!!!
The only good thing about this title is that I now know I can trust the reviews. The amount of stars are not consistent with the feedback because I didn’t think 4 stars was bad. I failed to read the reviews until the middle of this book - my bad. Nothing slightly significant happened until around chapter 52. The story was all over the place. Didn’t care about the characters. Maybe 1 character is like able. Some events happened out of nowhere. The end is so unbelievable. You’ll say “really?” Extremely disappointed. I’ve never selected a book by this author, so I’m now skeptical about selecting another. I do love Lucy, the narrator, and will always be a fan of her work!

A Drama That Doesn't Quite Deliver
The thriller genre is a fairly broad church containing everything from Jack Reacher's famously high body counts to the kind of books that K L Slater writes. These Slater books are more well-written dramas than outright thrillers and this one more than most. I found it engaging and enjoyable even though it is an extremely patient and low key setup. It is of course extremely well read by Lucy Price-Lewis who is one of the best narrators in the business for these kinds of books. There is a lot to like here.
Unfortunately, after the slow patient build up the last hour or so of the book suddenly goes a bit crazy. Although several of the key characters are built up for potentially odd behaviour it all just loses cohesion in a frantic final denouement that just didn't feel fitting. There were just too many convenient examples of characters dialling up the unexpected.
I will stick with this author, she has a quality of writing about her and an eye for making relatively mundane situations genuinely engaging but I felt oddly dissatisfied at the end of it all. She just didn't convince me like she has in the past.

Disappointing
There was so much scope for this story to expand, it just seemed like the bare bones. I like the author normally so was disappointed, I was waiting chapter by chapter for it to start properly. All the way through I was expecting more, in all the reader was good but the plot was poor. Sadly I did not enjoy it.

A well read story populated unlikeable characters
Most stories, particularly of this genre, have at least one likeable character. This story revolves around several characters, all whom are psychologically damaged or have nasty secrets. Made the listening quite uncomfortable for me as I could sense that there would be no Hollywood ending to satisfy. I have read other books by K. L. Slater and know that there are always twists and turns and probably an unlikely one towards the end. The twist in this story was more unbelievable than most but since I hadn't formed a fondness for any of the characters, it made little difference. Not the best but readable.

Ok
An ok read, not the best book I have read, but It is an easy book to listen and relax to without having to think too much, just a little slow and didn’t quite draw me and keep me up all night. Twist at the end was not expected! :)

Lots of secrets and twists I didn't see coming
Another great read by my favourite Audible author. I think I really enjoy the narrator (Lucy Price-Lewis), she adds plenty of emotion and can do male voices without being over the top.
This one went on a different tangent to what I thought was going to happen - which is good and surprising.
The story was set at a medium pace, plenty of red herrings and the usual nasty characters that you love to hate. Lots of subplots to round out the story (from Holly's past and present) and a heap of twists and secrets at the end. These stories always keep me entertained.

Great Narrator Not So Great Story
I really like KL Slater although this book was very easy to listen to and did have me on the edge of my seat a few times awaiting what will happen next it ended up being a pretty drawn out book with a pretty boring plot twist. Not bad but not all that great either.

interesting twisty thriller
Kept me engaged but not one of my fave Slater books. I found the whole Manchester episode somewhat unbelievable.
overall though, I enjoyed listening to it.

Long winded
Don’t get me wrong, I have enjoyed most of K.L. slaters books! However this one was a slow burn until close to the end. The ending was good though.

creepily epic
Another mindblowing read. kind of addicted to these books now. Story drags you in deliciously slowly and does not let you go. And the twist??????????
