The anatomy of the vagus nerve is actually a pair of nerves coming from the base of the skull on either side of the spine and then it has many branches going to the organs. It is not one nerve running down the length of the spine. The procedure of using electrical stimulation of the vagus has shown benefit for depression, but this signal is sent to the brain, not the heart.
