“For fans who appreciate emotionally wrenching reads such as those by Sarah Jio or Kristin Hannah.” (Library Journal)

“Fans of Jodi Picoult and Kristin Hannah now have a new go-to author.” (Sally Hepworth, best-selling author of The Secrets of Midwives)

From the best-selling author of The Things We Cannot Say, Before I Let You Go, and the upcoming The Warsaw Orphan, comes a poignant post-WWII novel that explores the expectations society places on women set within an engrossing family mystery that may unravel everything once believed to be true.

With her father recently moved to a care facility, Beth Walsh volunteers to clear out the family home and is surprised to discover the door to her childhood playroom padlocked. She’s even more shocked at what’s behind it - a hoarder’s mess of her father’s paintings, mounds of discarded papers and miscellaneous junk in the otherwise fastidiously tidy house.

As she picks through the clutter, she finds a loose journal entry in what appears to be her late mother’s handwriting. Beth and her siblings grew up believing their mother died in a car accident when they were little more than toddlers, but this note suggests something much darker.

Beth soon pieces together a disturbing portrait of a woman suffering from postpartum depression and a husband who bears little resemblance to the loving father Beth and her siblings know. With a newborn of her own and struggling with motherhood, Beth finds there may be more tying her and her mother together than she ever suspected.

Don't miss Kelly Rimmer's upcoming and unforgettable novel, The Warsaw Orphan.

While I enjoyed the story of this book, it disturbed me that the book was pro abortion. I believe life is sacred and while there were these sorts of issues in that day, I don’t believe that making abortion the answer to postpartum depression should be the lesson learned from that era. There were other solutions available for pregnancy even then. We need to learn from this that postpartum depression is not something to be ashamed of. Getting help is the best solution for everyone.

Pro Abortion

I loved this story, wanted to be in my car longer to hear what happens next. Truly a story that covers what has happened and where the world is now even though in fiction there are lots of truths included.

Great Listen!

I got this book based on a recommendation and it didn't disappoint. A simple story of a woman where just a few decades ago had very few choices.

a simple but absorbing story

The book begins with a whining, needy female who has a husband with secrets from his life before her. He doesn't talk to her, but she, as most wives, can tell when something's wrong. Well, I was willing to accept that premise but it's dragging on and on, with more secrets piling on. I don't want to listen to them anymore. Plus, with absolutely no denigration for my English friends, I'd prefer to listen to a book with an American accent narrating.

Drags on. And on.

Narrators enhanced the story by their realistic conveyance of the major characters's anxieties, resolve and attachments to others in their extended families. To me, the real theme was how access to reliable birth control is a dominant factor in the liberation of women.

Awesome narrators

This story does not preach or advocate for abortions. It tells the real story about how hard of a decision one has to make. The story also illustrates the difficult problem of mental illness in our society. How depression is misunderstood and how many of us are ashamed and afraid to discuss it.
I thought it was a sweet story and should create a space for discussion. It is hard to discuss issues if someone slams the door shut because the book dares to bring up a controversial subject. Be open minded and read it for pleasure and for enlightenment

Sad but enjoyable listening.

I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. I love the jumping from past and present and the intertwining stories. It was written so cleverly.

Amazing Book

This story is sad and heavy. It ends well, but this was not a book to read for entertainment. While it includes important topics, it was not for me.

Not my favorite
