Publisher's summary
As a therapist, Dr. Sherry Walling knew all the “right” things to say to help people through grief. But when she lost her father and her brother within six months of each other, she learned how much our current thinking about grief has to change. “There is no precise GPS for getting through grief,” says Dr. Walling. “And truth be told, we never arrive on the other side. It is a landscape we live in now.”
In Touching Two Worlds, this trusted expert dares to open the inner workings of her own grief—and in the process, provides a clear map for anyone searching for hope in the aftermath of loss. The book is the ideal gift to bring comfort to friends and family when there are few helpful words to say—written with honesty, gentle humor, and deep understanding.
Dr. Walling shares moving personal stories while offering a broad range of healing strategies and exercises for those currently moving through grief—like how to talk to bereaved people, cry on airplanes, and cope with survivor’s guilt. These are tips from someone who has been there, as well as approaches supported by her professional experience with her own patients.
Touching Two Worlds is a story of love, sadness, and renewal. Whether your loss is recent and sharp or old and familiar, Dr. Walling delivers wise and tender guidance through this new land—to carry the weight of grief while finding your own path forward.

Story
At a time when we mourn public figures and national tragedies with hashtags, where intimate posts about loss go viral and we receive automated birthday reminders for dead friends, it's clear we are navigating new terrain without a road map. Let's face it: Most of us have always had a difficult time talking about death and sharing our grief. We're awkward and uncertain; we avoid, ignore, or even deny feelings of sadness; we offer platitudes; we send sympathy bouquets whittled out of fruit.

Let yourself imagine what it will be like. Pack your bags. This book is one of those travel guides - a guide to preparing for your own death and the deaths of people close to you. The fact of death is hard to believe. Sallie Tisdale explores our fears and all the ways death and talking about death make us uncomfortable - but she also explores its intimacies and joys.

Every one of us sooner or later walks through hell. The hell of being hurt, the hell of hurting another. The hell of cancer, the hell of a reluctant, thunking shovel full of earth upon the casket of someone we deeply loved, the hell of betrayal, the hell of betraying, the hell of divorce, the hell of a kid in trouble...the hell of knowing that this year, like any year, may be our last. We all walk through hell. The point is not to come out empty-handed.... There is real and profound power in the suffering we endure if we transform that suffering into a more authentic, meaningful life.

In The Anatomy of a Calling, Lissa Rankin, MD, makes a simple yet revolutionary claim: We are all, every single one of us, heroes. We are all on what Joseph Campbell calls "a hero's journey"; we are all on a mission to step into our true nature and fulfill the assignment our souls were sent to Earth to fulfill. Navigating the hero's journey, Dr. Rankin argues, is one of the cornerstones of living a meaningful, authentic, healthy life.

Very Helpful In Dealing With Grief
Having lost my best friend to suicide in 2004, I have had therapy and read all of the books. And thought there would be very little new for me here. To my surprise, this was different and very helpful. Written in the 1st person, this was refreshing. And also nice that the author is a clinical psychologist, so incredibly sound advice.
And the bit about Disney and grief was eye-opening, and really brings home the necessity of helping out children through grief and getting rid of our programming.
If you are experiencing grief, or have a friend who is (Sherry also covers what to say and what not to say) I strongly recommend either getting the book or listening to this audio... this is ready by the author and you really feel it.
