Publisher's summary

The Great War is over, but one young widow discovers the real intrigue has only just begun.

England, 1919. Verity Kent's grief over the loss of her husband pierces anew when she receives a cryptic letter suggesting her beloved Sidney may have committed treason before his untimely death. Determined to dull her pain with revelry, Verity's first impulse is to dismiss the derogatory claim. But the mystery sender knows too much - including the fact that during the war Verity worked for the Secret Service, something not even Sidney knew.

Lured to Umbersea Island to attend the engagement party of one of Sidney's fellow officers, Verity mingles among the men her husband once fought beside and discovers dark secrets - along with a murder clearly meant to conceal them. Relying on little more than a coded letter, the help of a dashing stranger, and her own sharp instincts, Verity is forced down a path she never imagined and comes face-to-face with the shattering possibility that her husband may not have been the man she thought he was. It's a truth that could set her free - or draw her ever deeper into his deception.

Interesting Post WWI mystery

I enjoy Anna Lee Huber’s writing (very much liked her previous series). This is new, presumably the beginning of a new series?

Plot is quite well-woven, with many characters that she distinguishes well so the listener can keep up. The story features a young war widow, Verity Kent, who receives an odd invitation to attend an engagement party on Umbersea Island. Officers from her deceased husband’s unit are gathering, along with some single young women, at one person’s home there. She (rightly) feels uncomfortable as mysterious things and murder start to occur as soon as she arrives.

Story is good, characters interesting, mystery good—I didn’t figure out till very end. If only Ms. Huber would find a different narrator. I would have given the entire thing more stars with someone else reading it.

Narrator without inflection...

I gave this 2 stars because I couldn't finish. It was impossible to ignore the narrator's lack of inflection and odd pauses. Put those two things together and I couldn't even concentrate on the storyline. I have listened to all of Ms. Huber's books but for some reason this time Ms. Wilde was worse than usual. I plan to get the kindle version and read it for myself so I don't miss this story altogether. Have to say, worst narration I've encountered in a long time!!!

Narrator made impossible to finish

Like other reviewers, I found the Narrator impossible to listen to....flat and without a hint of character. Disappointed because the story seems to be one that I would enjoy.

Narrator!

This story is probably good, but I could not finish it, even at 1.5 speed. The intonation and rhythm of the narrator NEVER changes. This is the example of the importance of "acting" the books, not just reading.

Awful narration. Gave up.

What editor allows a narrator to singsong the entire book, regardless of punctuation?
I gave up on what is likely a charming story after the 5th time I had to really think about what has been said, based on her “read 5 words, take a breath, read 5 words, take a breath, disregard sentence structure” approach. It’s as though she read the words phonetically and wasn’t thinking for even a moment of the story she was reading.

What a gal Verity Kent Is!

The plot certainly has some twists! Love this wealthy “Modern” woman. Ah has quite a past! Fun to listen to as the Characters develop. Quite an end to a post WWI house party!

Terrible Narration

The narrator's reading style is very distracting with pauses in the wrong place and very little difference between the character's voices. Hard to follow the story because of it. Will read the other books rather than listen.

Entertaining

Interesting and full of surprises. I found the narration to be quite inadequate, with a sing-song cadence and no emotional variation.

I wish I could say more

After reading the description, I was excited to start this text. However, like others have said the narration is dull. I had a hard time following and “getting into it” for this reason. The story line seems like it is interesting though.

Wow

Liked
Everything about it. The time period, the mystery, all the characters, the h, two equally interesting men, that I would have been ok with either, as her love interest.
Narrator did a good job. And by that I mean , she was a good fit and didn't distract me from the story.
On another author's series I couldn't finish the audio book because the narrator was so horrible.
Most memorable moment was the shocking reveal and the satisfying way it was wrapped up.
Good job Anna Lee Huber. Thanks
