As Sapolsky explains, most of us do not lie awake at night worrying about whether we have leprosy or malaria. Instead, the diseases we fear-and the ones that plague us now-are illnesses brought on by the slow accumulation of damage, such as heart disease and cancer.

Very helpful, short book on depression
I started reading Harper’s more popular book, “Un**** Your Brain,” a few weeks ago. I’m really enjoying it so far. When I noticed that she had several other short books on mental illness, I picked this one up as well.
It’s a quick read / listen, but that doesn’t take away from its power. It gets to the root of depression quickly and effectively and makes you feel like you’re not alone nor crazy. In this one, Harper’s trademark style is on full display — swears, jokes, and the like.
Personally, I enjoy her somewhat explicit style; I think it provides comedic relief and solidarity amidst some difficult and heavy subject matters.
This one, structurally, reminded me of “F*** Anxiety” by Robert Duff in the sense that it’s a very good introduction to a specific mental illness. Sure, it’s not the entire picture of said illness, but it’s still quite effective and eye-opening.
I’d recommend this one for sure.

EnErGy HeAliNg Is ReAl-citation needed, never given
The author makes claims about debunked woo woo without evidence. At one point, the only thing in support of this is that UCLA is researching “electrical activity in the body” which is distinctly not “energy healing”. Another claim, not backed up by anything other than at most one (poorly done) study claiming EH is as effective as Physical Therapy. If true, why don’t we see energy healers in PT clinics? See, you can’t use the “BIG PHARMA BAD” argument here cuz they have nothing to do with PT. Could it be, just maybe, that EH is total bullsh*t? That’s the conclusion a rational person would reach.
The rest of the book aside from this turn into Dumbassville is actually really good, including getting proper nutrition (a not nonsense thing because our body is a bag of chemical reactions and without the right stuff it can get eff’ed up.)
6/10, wouldn’t recommend unless the person was well versed in the scientific method & thinking.

Pseudoscience
The earlier bits of the piece are informative about the types of depression. The problem arises when we get to the section on treating depression. The majority of treatments the author discusses are pure pseudoscience. Expect to learn that chiropractics, going gluten free (regardless of whether you have any sensitivity to gluten), traditional Chinese medicine, and "energy healing" are worth your time when trying to treat depression. Prescription medication and therapy are mentioned, but the author talks about them in the same breath as she does sticking needles in your back to orient your chakras. Please, seek out sources of information that are based on facts instead of this drivel.

Great book too much unnecessary swearing
Fantastic book. Totally love it... well except the swearing. Harper gets down to the nitty gritty of mental illness, brain dysfunction, the common misdiagnosis of depression and (what I love the most) the importance of nutrition, cbt and other modern tools from the standard armamentarium. Yes beyond just using pharmaceuticals to heal the mind.
She gives root causes, points out some solutions and also directs you to organisations that can guide/help. I'm not incredulous, but I am in awe. I endorse this book except for the swearing, Lol.

Brief but interesting
Content - The content focus on depression, worry guilt and shame. The symptoms of depression and indicators that you are showing signs of depressive disorder. Brief summaries of causes of behaviours, and treatment options. Faith Harper in all her short self-help books explores alternatives to medications which is great, it's taking a new world approach to how we should manage mental health disorders. I like the mention of bi-polar disorder in relation to depression as I've seen so many people I support misdiagnosed and not receiving the correct support and treatment option available.
Audio Quality - Good, listened via audible.
Overall - Was a good listen, simple to follow along with.
