Publisher's summary

Theodosia Throckmorton has her hands full at the Museum of Legends and Antiquities in London. Her father may be head curator, but it is Theo and only Theo who is able to see all the black magic and ancient curses that still cling to the artifacts in the museum. Sneaking behind her fathers back, Theo uses old, nearly forgotten Egyptian magic to remove the curses and protect her father and the rest of the museum employees from the ancient, sinister forces that lurk in the museums dark hallways.

Great Book for Homeschool!

We listened to this book as a part of our homeschool curriculum while studying ancient Egypt. The book was not only a fantastic and engaging story with a stellar main character, it also brought to life a lot of what we studied. This is the perfect tie-in for anyone wanting their kids to engage with history.

Theodosia is a well written character who is tenacious, curious, and has interests outside of those “normal” 11 years old have. This is great for kids who may have similar traits. The negative is that she spends a lot of the book lying to her parents and sneaking around, but she’s doing it for the greater good. There is nuance in her relationship with her parents, which gave plenty of opportunities for discussion.

I listened to this with my 7 and 8 year olds. They were able to follow along and enjoyed the plot, but it probably would have been too advanced in both language and concepts for an independent read. We had to pause to discuss words and give context fairly often.

Overall I would highly recommend this book. We’ve tried both the physical copy and the audiobook, and the audiobook really shines for the fantastic narration.

Fun YA for all ages

A sassy genius child navigating through the most outrageous adventures inside and out of a museum and the Egyptian tombs themselves. Believable? Not at all! But that is just a detail in a story that involves gods and potions anyway.

Great listen

A children's author R. LaFevers is not. And trust me when I say this is meant as the most highest compliment. This book transcends the boundary of age and can entertain and educate on all levels. I highly recommend this book for those die hard Harry Potter fans and see this as the next big hit. Can't wait to get the next book.

An 11 Year Old Girl Saves the World

A very precocious 11 year old girl saves the world from agents of chaos who wish to take over the world using ancient Egyptian curses and magic to aid their cause. Fans of Rick Riordan's "Red Pyramid" should enjoy this book.

I thought it well written, filled with fun characters and interesting Egyptian lore. At first, she seems to have the most neglectful, clueless parents in the world, but they redeem themselves in the end. She is given an impossible task by the head of a secret society which opposes the chaos agents. We have to grant extreme poetic license in order to suspend reality to a world where an 11 year old girl could be asked to do such a thing in complete secrecy with no outside help other than the Egyptian gods. Other than that, I found it delightful as I'm sure children 10 years and up will.
